The 2TB version. How good is it? Will you notice any performance gaines even without directstorage?

It should be quite good, it is one of the best consumer NVMe drives. What are you upgrading from and what are the rest of your system specs? And what are you using it for?

In general I don't think so, but this could depend on your usage, airflow, and ambient temps.

It sure did.

Samsung 980 pro has a performance mode, if enabled it went up to 60C idle.

I installed a heatsink and it came down to 40C idle.

Pcie 4.0 ssd gets very hot. You need a heatsink

The "Performance" mode simply disables the low-power idle states. So of course idle power and idle temperature go up. It doesn't do much for performance, though.
