Hi all,

Just bought Sony DRU510A and need help installing it.

This is the first time for me taking apart my PC so please bare with me.

I have 2 hard drives in Raid 0 and I don't know how to install this drive.

I currently have a Lite-on DVD rom and a NEC NR-7700a installed.

Any help is welcome : >

Thanks so much !

Deborah

Ahhhhh. An easy one. 😉 Your hard drives are in a RAID Array so that won't really interfere. (I'm assuming that the RAID Array uses it's own IDE connectors.) This means that you probably have the Lite-On and NEC installed in their own IDE chains. (One being Primary Master, the other being Secondary Master). You can tell if they're on the same chain because they would both be connected to the same IDE cable. What I would do is install the DVD-RW onto the same IDE chain as your CD-RW. (Since I doubt you'll be using both at the same time, you wouldn't have to worry about resource issues). This will make it so that your DVD-ROM and HDD are on their own chains, and the burning devices are sharing one. If you could tell us some more specifics about how your computer is set up, we could get a little more detailed for you. (I.E. which motherboard you have, what drives are connected to what IDE Chain, etc. etc.) 🙂

The drive should come with an installation instruction sheet, so check for that. Basically:

  • shut off the computer
  • open the case
  • physically put the drive into the case and screw it into position if necessary with your type of case
  • look at your existing optical drives... either they're both on one cable, leaving a motherboard plug free for another cable, or they're each on a separate cable
  • if both of your existing drives are on one cable, then
    • plug your Sony into its own cable that came with it
    • plug that into the motherboard's vacant port
    • give the Sony a 4-wire power cable
    • fire up the computer to see if it's recognized
  • if both your existing drives are solo on their own cables, then
    • pick one of them and set the jumper on it to Slave
    • set the jumper on your Sony to Master
    • put the Sony on the end plug, with the Slave drive on the middle plug
    • give the Sony a 4-wire power plug
    • fire it up to ensure it's recognized
Hope that helps 😀

Oh, Thanks so so much for the quick replies : >

Ok, I have a Gigibyte gx 7 board. Not sure if that's the correct name but it's gigabyte and g7 something. Via chip I think. I'm really not familiar with boards and all, sorry.

I opened my PC and it has only one cable. The cable goes from the DVD rom to the cd-rw then to my board.

So should I just remove both drives and connect the sony where the other cable was to the board?

What cable should i use, the one that came (new one) with the sony or use the one that's alreay plugged into board?

Oh, My two hard drives have their own cables going to the board. I don't know which one is master or slave.

Thankyou so very very much!

Deborah

If you are only going to have the sony installed just remove both drives. Set the sony to master and plug it into the top plug of the existing cabe.
If you wish to keep one of the other drives set it to slave and connect it to the second plug on the cable.

Thanks so much!

Ok, I'll do what you suggest.

Is there any benefit in leaving the other DVD -rom in? I will be burning my collection of dvd's for backup if that helps.

I'm tired of lending out my movies only to have them returned scratched and sometimes not playable or freeezing .

Thankyou so kindly

Deborah

I forgot to ask if there is an additional IDE port.
If you want to the Lirte-On and the Sony it would be best to have them on seperate channels. This would be better for Dvd to DVD copies.
If you have an additional IDE port set both drives to master and plug each one into its own port.
If you do not; hook them both to the same cable.
There are two reasons you would want to keep the light on.
1. It has a higher DVD speed.
2. Copy on the fly. (disc to disc)

Hi,

I found a extra ide port right next to the original one.

I hooked up the sony to the cable that was the and i hooked up the DVD rom to new ide slot using the sony cable.

I started up pc and my drives are not detected.help?

The power wire that goes to drives (4 pins) yellow black and red wires. The yeloow wires are facing the outer part of pc . Is this the correct way or should they be facing inwards?

What happen?

I just tried the buttons on the drives and they open and close so they are getting power.

The thing is when i started up pc the drives were'nt detected. Should I try them out after installing the software?

Deborah

It may be that you have two drives set as Master on the same cable (won't work that way), or two drives set as Slave on the same cable (won't work that way either). One has to be Master, the other Slave (ok, that's a generalization, but let's go with it for simplicity).

Solution: get a flashlight and look at the jumpers on the rear of the drives. The two drives that share the same cable should not both be set for Master, or both for Slave. Make one the Master, usually the one furthest from the motherboard, and make the other the Slave.

If that doesn't resolve it, let us know.

Hi again,

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me!

Ok, I have both drives on sepaerate cables going to their own ide slots. I have both set to master.

Ok, I started up the pc again and they still are not detected, but i noticed the lights on
both drives blink like they they use to with the original drives.

Since they wer'nt detected i went in to "accessories" - "system tools"- "system information"
and under system summary I see both drives listed .

So does that mean my pc detected them?

Being that i have both on their own cables connected to their own ide ports
do i have it right by having them both set to master?

Thanks a billion!

Deborah

One of the replies to me said
"If you have an additional IDE port set both drives to master and plug each one into its own port."
and that's what i did.

Is this correct or a typo?

I'm going to try and installed the software and see what ( BIG GRIN )blows up!

Deborah

When you open up "My Computer," it should show your drives in there. (If you have a floppy, then it would show the floppy drive as A:\, your RAID Array hard drive as your C:\ drive, and your DVD-ROM, DVD-Burner, and CD-RW as D:\, E:\, and F:\) If your system is detecting the drives, then you'll know it from inside Windows Explorer. If it is NOT detecting the drives, then perhaps you have connected the IDE cables incorrectly? On the IDE cables, there should be one red line. This red line corresponds to pin number one. This red line should always be right next to the power plug of the drive. If you plug it in backwards, the drive will not be recongized.

BTW, good choice on the DRU-510A. I picked that up a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the hideous front bezel of it and the force required to nudge the tray shut. Otherwise it's been great.

Ha!

The drives are detected, yippieeeeee!

I like to thank all that replied to me, THANKS SOOOOO MUCH : >

"The only thing I don't like is the hideous front bezel of it and the force required to nudge the tray shut"

The front bezel is ugly! The color is white (which is'nt that bad ) and does'nt match my boring beige case!

As fro the tray, it's quite sturdy compare to my drives. You can tell just by the sound and smoothness it's well made. I guess that's why it takes a nudge to close it. No wobbly feeling at all.

1 question: When i installed the software 5 out of the six installs went well. I could'nt install "DLA" , it said i have to uninstall my easy creator 4 ,not compatiable.

Why is this happening?

Thanks again to all.

I will test burning DVD's in the morning(getting late here) and see if it's trouble free.

Any test i can run to see if it's working correctly?

Deborah

DLA would be "drive-letter access," which is the part of the software package that would let you just drag-&-drop files onto the drive when it's got a rewritable disc in it, as if it were a ji-normous floppy diskette 😀 For your purposes, it doesn't sound like it'll matter. The reason it didn't install could be if it doesn't work with your version of Windows, perhaps.
