Just bought Oblivion

I just bought the Oblivion game of the year edition (so it comes with the two expansions) as I am in the mood for a good RPG. I have never played any other games from the Elder Scrolls series but I hope this is easy enough to pick up. Is there anything I should be careful of or do prior to starting (mods?) or perhaps any tips from those of you who have this game?

Don't just grab every item you see in town unless you want to get arrested. You can take ANYTHING, but if you get caught you'll get a bounty on your head. Also, if you steal something, you can only sell stolen goods back to particular vendors (thieves guild contacts)

I don't know anything about mods, but I thought the vanilla story was pretty fun. I highly recommend joining the guilds, although joining the assassins and thieves guilds are a little less obvious than joining the others. Do as many missions as you can.

One of the first missions was to follow this merchant and see how he could sell his goods for a low price than his competitors. I made an assassin character and followed the guy for many hours, but unfortunately there was a bug with a "secret meeting" that was supposed to take place. I read many months later that some cutscene was supposed to take place, but I just sat there in the bushes wandering around from tree to bush to well, hoping to get to the next step of the quest...to no avail. That pissed me off so much that I ended up deleting the game and selling it on Ebay. Don't do what I did. Hopefully that bug has been patched. I heard that the rest of the game is wonderful.

edit: typo

Haha, exactly what I was thinking.
Mide, are you seriously whining about ONE bug? That's sad.

Thanks for the input guys :). I can't get my comp up and running till most likely this weekend since it is still in pieces after my adventure to watercooling. I can't wait! Time to read over the manual again :p. I was reading through the Tweakguides Guide on Oblivion and I think the only Mods I'll Install will be graphical ones, as I want to play through the Vanilla storyline before I start using other mods. I assume the Race/Class one chooses defines how you will play the rest of the game, I am thinking of a stealth Character. What do guilds offer? Quests and spells/ability?

At the very least look at getting the BTMod. It helps remove some of the console-ish limitations off the UI.

Not sure what type of computer you have but if its pretty beefy there are a lot of mods out there that make the game look nicer.

I first played oblivion a few months ago and loved it. If you try not to rush through the main story the game is awesome!

No, but third party mods might add it (I believe that was the case with Morrowind).

One of the main flaws of Oblivion is the leveling / monster scaling system. You will need a third party mod to correct it. I have not played in a very long time, but I believe that oscuros oblivion overhaul corrected it. There are probably better mods that serve the same purpose out there by now.

I played a Wood elf archer/swordsman with the sign that gives you plus 20 speed or something. It was a blast as I could run really fast and jump really high. I would get on top of things and snipe with my arrows. Almost made it an RPG/FPS game. Good stuff. I got the mod that made the inventory system smaller so I could see more on the screen.

Start rounding up mods. With the right batch, you can turn it into the game it should've been at launch.

That said, it's still an enjoyable sandbox for a bit.

With the proper mods installed, this becomes the best RPG I've ever played. It's seriously got just about everything in it.

I'm running around with two other companions, a marksman and a mage. It's like a old style dnd party that you can go anywhere with. Mart's Monster Mod adds around 1200 new monsters to fight with, so the difficulty is still kept right. Franceso's mod adds around 500 new weapons and fixes the leveling system. I still have yet to buy Shivering Isles or Knights of Nine, and I've been playing since August. There is seriously no limit to the amount of things you can do in this game.

My character was originally supposed to be a warrior but I got into the Thevies guild and now hes a level 33 barbarian/theif. He plays both roles pretty well. :p

You SHOULD download and install the Unofficial Oblivion Patches BEFORE starting a new game, that is a bare minimum. They fix THOUSANDS of various bugs, from minor stuff to quest-breaking ones. And then perhaps investigate in which "extra" mods you want to actually enhance the game-play.

Is there a mod manager type utility for Oblivion? One that simplifies the downloading, or installing of mods? Seems like it'd be a pretty useful tool.

I just recently found the Mod manager, see below. So the mods I aim to load up before playing are as follows:

Unofficial Oblivion patch (does this work with the latest patch?)

Martigen's Monster Mod

Francesco's leveled creatures/items mod

Nearly every graphical mod on this page of the Tweakguides guide Click

Mod manager

Am I going overboard?

Agree 100%. I wanted to like Oblivion so much, but it's just so dumbed down. But, I never tried any of the mods, sounds like they improve the game quite a bit. I'll probably install it again and look into some mods. I just couldn't get passed the level up/enemies scaling with your character system... it kind of made leveling up pointless.

Try the ABO OMOD collection, which includes a leveling fix ;)

BTMod for sure. I played with difficulty level higher than normal - maybe 75%, which made the game a bit more challenging. There was one time where I was stuck in a specific location (the painting world) and could not get out without lowering the difficulty level, though. I used chameleon quite a bit to survive as I leveled up.
