just bought my first notebook

Looks fairly decent if a bit entry-level. Can you tell me, does the bottom panel come off easy, with one screw, like my V5-131 Acer? The HDD and RAM should be right under that panel and easily replaceable.

no, you have to remove 18 screws to get the bottom off.

this one has only one mem slot so if I want 8gig I'll have to replace instead of adding. I may decide to replace the drive down the road with an ssd.

After installing SSD and fresh install of Windows 8.1, you should be very happy with boot, shut down and all around performance. I've seen MX100 and Samsung 840/850 around 250GB for $99 if you wait for the right hot deal to come along.

Congrats on your purchase, I remember when my first laptop cost $1,999 about 14 years ago. Back then the 802.11b WiFi card was a stand alone upgrade which cost $99 😱

cost was one reason why I held out for so long, plus I really didn't see the need until now. usually if I'm traveling I'm usually too busy to mess with a computer. right now waiting for a call from a realtor and if that doesn't pan out i can look online. just looking for a rental house for now.

Assuming you live near a major metropolitan city, don't forget to use craigslist.org

I have, but I only have 3 days, relocating from KC to Charlotte. craigslist doesn't look too promising but will use it.
