Short story : went abroad for a holiday and returned to find my computer got totaled because leaked roof and 13 hours of continuous train.

Short on money and computer prices are ridiculous in South East Asia so I bought me a kaveri to ride me over for a while.

Questions :
1. Do we know a likely time frame for Carrizo release?
2. Does using kaveri igp reduces my available ram?
3. Will Carrizo be using the same socket ?

Speculated 2H 2015 for Carizzo and it's said to have the chipset integrated fch

As for Kaveri some mobos allow for you to set frame buffer size, so it will use some of your system memory.

isnt that only mobile? Carrizo desktop was to use FM2+ with the bolton FCH.

Rumour has it that all Carrizo chips will have an on-chip FCH, it'll just be disabled if there is an external FCH. Wonder if anybody will make a mainboard using the on-chip FCH. That could be pretty interesting.

Anyway, Carrizo should be plug-and-play compatible with FM2+, at most it'll require a BIOS/UEFI upgrade to work.

Let us hope Carrizo even comes to FM2+. Latest rumors point to mobile only due to sever clock deficit Vs Kaveri parts ( which won't be fully compensated by the similar IPC increase resulting in lower overall performance Vs desktop Kaveri we have today).

65W TDP Kaveri is already at low 3.1GHz(Base), I dont believe even using HDL Carrizo will not be able to at least have the same frequency.

In a way the 2h 2015 is a good thing for me. I thought it would come in January i.e. one year after kaveri. Felt terrible buying it but I've had enough only being able to use my smartphone for all my computing needs.

I still don't quite get how much vram kaveri's igp actually have.

My motherboard has an option in the uefi to set the frame buffer size, I have mine set to 2gb...so 2gb out of my 8gb of system memory is reserved for the igp. This may depend on your drivers and/motherboard.

Ah. Gotcha. Was hoping against all odds that kaveri comes with its own vram hidden somewhere in the mobo or APU.

In all honesty, meh.

If you got 8GB of ram...as a gamer you will never feel the difference between 6 vs 8 gb of Ram with the kind of settings/games that the Kaveri can play.

I do hope that you got ram with at least 2133 mhz, though...otherwise that Kaveri isn't gonna do anything. (Not to mention the price difference between 1600 and 2133 is often 5$ and less...and for some reason 2400 is sometimes cheaper than 2133.)

If you don't play games with the machine or play in low res like 720P then you might as well reduce your dedicated ram to 1 GB if your board supports that setting. 1080P should be 2GB. I used the 7850K with 2GB setting at 2560@1080 and it never quite filled up...but did push past 1GB quite a bit (1.5ish).

Holy molly.
Just got my Kaveri and somehow it is using 4.6 GB (!!) for something, marking it as "hardware reserved".

Right now I am at 3.1 GB used out of 3.4 GB available memory.
A bit of googling seems to indicate that it will free up the memory when needed. But I'm just gonna go to BIOS and see if I can set it to use a maximum of 1GB.

I actually do need lots of memory. Often run virtual machine / 30 tabs chrome / LoL / EU4 or FM2014 all at the same time.

That means that it is detecting the RAM via the SPD, but it cannot access it. Try re-seating it, and use MSCONFIG and check out the RAM limit settings.

Thanks.
Should've known that. Have had the same problems a few times before throughout the years. Somehow thought it meant something else in Kaveri.

Too bad my memory wont even reach 1866 Mhz. Caused me some cold sweat when it wont detect the ram after the overclocking effort, had to reseat it like 6 times causing me to think I just borked my ram.

AMD will likely soft launch in January, again, with availability ramping through mid 2015.

Kaveri was not soft launched, except for the A8-7600 which was supposed to be released at the end of Q1 2014 but then changed to Q3. A10-7850K and 7770K was available since January 2014.

Damn. Looks like something -is- wrong with my RAM.
After Windows finished booting up, the usable memory is 7.4 gb (512 mb for the IGP) yet after a while the usable memory is down to 3.4 GB while hardware reserved memory is up to 4.6 GB.

Maybe it was actually damaged like the motherboard.

Gonna have to find a cheapo 8gb ram in a single kit that does 1866 / 2133.

I'm no longer in the US and probably not gonna be back for a long time. Will be going to EU instead. ATM I'm stuck in the past, i.e. Southeast Asia, where prices are high and customer service is non-existent. Gosh, I really miss Amazon.

Btw, I'm using this cheapo motherboard right here and am wondering if its okay to buy memory that is not listed in the compatibility list. Moreover, would it be okay to buy say DDR3-2400 if it says it only support up to 1866.

Always check qvl before you buy.

I assumed OP meant mobile kaveri. Rereading, it seems he bought a desktop kaveri.

I predict desktop Carrizo will have at least some availability in early 2015. But like I said, I predict we will hear about it in January.
