Just bought Hitachi t7k250 - makes wierd noise

I bought the 250 gig version T7k250 and it makes clicking noises every once in a while. I think this is the head reset noise that others were talking about.

Those that have this drive does your make this clicking noise?

What about the 160 gig version. Does this one also make this noise?

I love this drive - it's very fast and stays cool, but has this clicking noise.

According to the below review:

"One of the general complaints about the Deskstar line in the past is the intermittent "head reset" noise that it makes every ten minutes or so when idling, and the 7K250 also exhibits this noise. It's been characterized as a "chirping" or "meowing" sound that lasts two or three seconds. Personally, I think the closest comparison is the sound a camcorder makes when loading a tape. The volume of the noise is slightly higher than the seek noise; I'd guesstimate it at ~30 dBA/1m."

I can't find an alternate drive that's as fast and stays cool like the hitachi with ncq & sata II.

I hope somone chimes in who has the 160 gig version. I'm afraid that it also has the clicks.

I got the a couple of the 160 version in today and ordered them because I also read how the 250's made noise but many stated that they quieted down after usage...I should have them up and running tomorrow if time allows so if no one else reports back I will...I also have some WD's that clack upon start up but have been fine for years...

Yea I'd like to know too I ordered a 160GB althouhg it was IDE-133. Probably the same thing just different connection. Tell me what you think.

I have two 160's in raid and I hear some noises but it is nothing major. Dont let it hamper your buyin decisions. They are smooooth drives.

LED - will wait to hear from you.

Since my shuttle xpc is on my desk right next to me. I hear the sounds more.

I'm thinkin now just wait for the seagate 7200.9 200,250, or 300 gig.

I have 6 Hitachi T7K250 HDD in a RAID 10 format right now (although I am thinking of using RAID 5 or RAID 0). I really like these drives.

Yes, I have heard the clicking...

Are you saying that clicking sound (that happens occasionally) is that big of a deal compared to fan noise, background noise, etc.? C'mon...please:roll:

I have not heard or read many great things about the Seagate 7200.9 HDD. I am not saying they aren't good drives, but think the consensus is the fastest, highest perfomance, SATA, 250GB drive is the Hitachi T7K250.

One thing I really like about the Hitachi T7K250 HDD is it has both SATA and Molex power connectors. I really hate using SATA power as the damn things don't always stay plugs in.

Too me it's a big deal since the computer is right by me. And I can hear it over all my computer's fan noise.

I also have a raptor 74gig as my primary and that drive is fine because it has no clicking. Even though it's louder drive.

Too some it might be a minor thing.

I popped 1 in and had no noise...will check the other later today on the next Rig...I have an 80 gig on a Rig which I sold and was told there hasn't been any sounds so it possible that it's the Hammer on the platters that's causing it...there's also a Review on the new Cuda 7200.9.

The Egg..I'd also like to stipulate because the early IBM's were Glass heads because of the change the dent in th Matel can't break the glass 😉

Are you talking about the meowing sound?

Email Hitachi about an updated firmware.... Mine used to meow, but I emailed them for a new firmware, and ever since I updated it stopped doing that.

It stills makes a hard clicking sound every so often, maybe once a week or so.

Still sealed and won't be opened till I see the $'s 4 it 😉

I'm talking about the clicking sound - not sure if it's meow sound.

Mine has a date of 11/05, so it should have the new firmware right? I will email them and see what they say.

Not necessarily plus there's an addition to the firmware to have it run in a quiet mode

You mean by downloading the Feature Tool (v1.99) and running in quiet seek mode right? Doesn't the drive run slower if you do this.

But if it's in quiet mode it runs slower.

Not by much and what's the rush over a few milliseconds anyways to have it peaceful and quiet? 😉

What concerns power and heat saving in Quiet Seek mode (instead of regular Fast Seek mode), it shows only in active random seek mode (there is no difference in other modes) and concerns mostly the current on the +12 V line (lower current is used for "profile" positioning of brackets with heads). The power saving amounts to 3.2 W for Hitachi Deskstar 7K250, 2.8-2.9 W for modern Maxtor hard disks (and 2.4 W for two-platter DiamondMax Plus 9), about one Watt for Samsung SpinPoint P80 and P120 (their seek time actually changes very little), the same one Watt for WD3200JD/B and 2.5 W for WD2500JD/B from the previous series (with 80GB platters). It's up to you to decide whether the game is worth the candle, as this significant power saving (up to 3 W) will be noticeable only in specific tasks with active frequent seeks across the entire disk (like server loads), which suffer from slower seeks. However, considering that modern ATA disks practically don't lose any performance in Quiet Seek mode at the majority of typical "desktop" tasks (probably except for active swapping, if the system has insufficient memory), switching such hard disks to the Quiet Seek mode will do only good ? they will become quieter and even a tad cooler. 🙂 That's how I prefer using them.

I just talked to Hitachi - there is no firmware update for my drive. I'll try the quiet setting and see how that goes.

Well no luck. I booted off the cd software 1.99 and it didn't let me select the hitachi drive. It let me select my raptor but not the hitachi.

When I tried it froze... I burned another cd and still same thing. I tried only connecting hitachi drive and still same thing.

This drive is going back.
