So I'm picking up my 2009 Civic EX Coupe MT tomorrow and was wondering if you guys have any tips other than what my dad told me (Just make sure oil is always changed).

Never owned my own car before (or posted in the garage) so any help you guys can offer would be great. Any street packages you would recommend I pick up or just tips on how to keep my car in good shape is much appreciated.

Please no flames (either trolling or decals) about my civic.

Street packages?

Tips:
Don't put a wing, large wheels, obnoxious cheap exhaust, colored interior parts, aftermarket lighting, or speakers you can hear from the outside on it.

Get some nice aftermarket floormats, bag and box the originals to put back in when you sell it.

Keep food/drink/smokers out of it.

Honda motors do great with stuff like Schaeffer's or Amsoil. How long are you gonna keep it?

Nice car :)

Learn the maintenance schedule and do it.

If you are looking at mods and things like that, find a Civic forum and figure out what common easy mods are out there. Personally I prefer any sort of factory accessory/mods.

Check the manual for break-in guidelines for your car.

I'm interested in hearing about these street packages. What kind do you have in mind? Any links?

Congrats on the new car! (I have a 07 Civic MT Sedan myself)

Random stuff that comes to mind:
- The floor mats wear out very quickly, so you may want to change them if you want to keep the ones it comes with in good condition. I didn't know this, and, 16000 miles and 1 year later, I have a pretty unsightly worn out spot where my right heel goes. Oh well, too late now, so I'll just keep 'em.
- As far as oil changes, my car takes ~4.25 quarts instead of the 3.9 listed in the manual. So if you change it yourself, you need to buy 5 quarts -- 4 won't do the job.
- You can pretty much follow the little maintenance minder built into the dash for when to do what, but it doesn't tell you to rotate your tires much, so you may want to just do that based on what the tire manufacturer says (for example, every 5000 miles)
- Keep the revs down until it warms up. You may also want to follow the break in instructions and don't beat on it too hard while you're breaking it in. There are different schools of thought on this...
- I'd remove any dealer decals before you can tell they were there. Maybe even have the dealer do this when you pick up the car?
- A silly tweak you can find at 8thcivic: You can get both the passenger and driver's door to unlock when shutting the car off so your passenger doesn't break his door trying to get out.
- Another silly tweak: You can set the defroster to light the AC light when it turns on so you can have the AC off and defroster on by hitting the AC button after turning on the defroster.
- This is purely _my_ experience, and I hate mentioning it for fear it will derail your thread, but if you notice idle is rough, try running 89 octane instead of 87. 87 _is_ fine for the car, though.
- the drive-by-wire throttle plays interesting games. There is a slight rev hang you'll just have to get used to. There is also a slight lag, so you may stall a few times because of it. But your foot will adjust.
- 8thcivic.com

All of the above are very minor things, though. Enjoy your car!

Follow the break in process the owners manual recommends.

Follow the maintenance schedule as well.

Thanks guys! Especially for the tip on the floor mats. And Yelo: thx for the newbie guide ;)

I just got a job in Dela-where so I'm moving there on saturday. It's a manager training program so if things go well, in two years I'll probably trade the civic in for maybe an Accord or a Carolla if I can afford it.

Haven't really thought about doing any after-market mods. Doesn't come with a spoiler, so if I were to get anything (and I don't really plan on it) it would be something small to go on the back to make it look a little sportier. Now that I think of it, maybe I'll also get a nice Type-R sticker to really give me some extra hp when I need to impress the wimminz. ;)

Nope. I'm a mutt from all the greatest countries in Europe; France, England, Scotland and Poland. Emphasis on Poland being great.

Thanks! And for the record: Pho is the most delicious soup on earth. Especially when they really let the bone simmer and get all that good bone marrow out.

Do not mod it.

Do not pay for wheel lock, door protectors, etaching and all of that bullshit. If they say they can't take it off, then tell them you are not paying a penny more.

Drop that immediately with stiffer springs and swap the tires for pirelli. This is at a bare minimum. Get a blower and also a 40 shot of NOS. Engine can handle that ok, maybe a rebuild after 15-20k at the earliest. Autozone sells a 6th gear and u can install in an hour or two for over 30 lbs torque at the lights right off the bat. Haters will say I'm lyin, but it's a fact.

Can I still have my Type-R sticker on it?

OK. I really liked my Civic LX.

Here are some nuisances...
Rugs wear out easily.
Interior quality is horrible.
Rattles like no tomorrow.
Idling is horrific! Especially when you slowly turn the wheel at a stop.

Despite that...I realize now that rattles and interior quality isn't everything. I would love to get a new Si coupe and turbo the damned thing. Rattles and interior can go to hell...although popping 3rd gear might be annoying. :D

I wish I had learned to love my Civic for the engine, and potential, than waste every moment wondering where that new rattle came from. :(

Why would we flame you? *cough* chick car *cough*

Hehe, j/k. I seriously considered picking one up myself. Can't beat the gas mileage.

As far as tips, read the manual and find out whether it's running synthetic oil or not and follow their recommendations for oil changes. If you do the changes yourself make sure you get the right weight/viscosity oil and if there's a specific filter required get that too. The car is brand new so it shouldn't need anything for quite a while. Tires will probably be your first big investment. And around 20-30k on the odo change out the air filter.

Other than that, regularly check your fluid levels, oil, coolant, brake fluid and enjoy your new car!

And come on back when you have your first prob, lol.
