Upgrade to the MDA last week. I'll admit it's better than the side kick, it does lack as a PDA(only 200MHZ), can't use skype and I'm not sure about video playback support(I'll find out when I get my memory card)

Now I find out HTC is expected to release the Hermes next month.
From what I've read the Heremes is the same as the MDA but, get this.
3G support(UTMS/HSDPA) along with 2.75G Edge(Something the JasJar lacked and why I didn't go with that phone), and a 416MHZ CPU.

AHHHH, That' what I've been wanting.:(

Now excuse me while I go pout over my 350 dollar "mistake"

UTMS is worthless with TMo US for a while. There'll be bigger and better phones out by the time they roll it out. Other than that and the CPU bump, there's not much I like about the Hermes, except for the addition of a scroll wheel (why every WinMo device doesn't have one I'll never understand). They totally fvcked the button placement.

Overclock your MDA to 240MHz using OMAPClock and it'll do just about anything you need it to. I'm not sure about Skype though, and don't particularly care, personally.

And man you got screwed paying $350 for it, were you not eligible for upgrade pricing? Not want to sign a contract extension? Mine was $250 after 50 rebate and 1 year extension, and I bought it the day it came out.

Was like $299.99 for a 2 year extension or $349.99 with a 1 year. I figure 3g will be out next year and I'll upgrade again at that time.(Besides I'll never ever sign a 2 year contract)

Although, with the Hermes I wouldn't need a phone upgrade next year.

Oh well, maybe I'll unlock the MDA, and then hock it on Ebay, after my Sidekick II sells.
That is if I can afford the other phone. I've heard Dell was going to have their own Branded version of the Hermes. (maybe the Dell will have full keboard with a number line)

Just because HTC releases the Hermes to OEMs next month doesn't mean you'll be able to get it then. The Wizard has been available to OEMs for in excess of a year.

You won't be buying a branded Hermes in 2006, and probably not in 2007 either. At the end, maybe...

I highly doubt that T-Mobile will have UMTS running within the next year. As far as the other stuff, just overclock the MDA to 240Mhz and it will run just about everything you need (including skype).

I personally think that it does a very good job as a PDA. The TI CPU perfectly fast for videos (I have a 1gb memory card in mine) as well as most pocket pc apps (email, word, etc.). What more do you need on a PDA?

At the same time it's extremely power efficient. My main worry about HTC switching to an Intel CPU is that the thing will suck battery power like no tomorrow.

I can careless about the Brand. I just want the phone. SIMs are a wounderful thing on unlocked phones.

You misunderstand. HTC doesn't sell to end-users. Just because they've released to OEMs (Qtek, I-Mate, Cingular, T-Mobile, Vodafone) doesn't mean the phone is being released. It means that the companies are getting final revision hardware for evaluation and software development. You're still close to a year away from being able to buy a Qtek or I-Mate version if the Wizard is any indication.

Bottom line: By the time it's available, you'll be ready for a new phone anyway.

Every MDA post I read makes me more and more glad I haven't dumped SKII yet. At this rate, I'm going to hold off and hope that SKIII has Bluetooth and EDGE and even smarter software.

As others have said, TMO isn't going to be rolling out UTMS....maybe ever. They've taken the GPRS/EDGE rollout and hybridized it with WiFi hotspots. I'm for one very disappointed with this approach. I would love to see UTMS/HSDPA on the TMO network as I don't always carry a laptop with me, but there's always a cell phone close by.

I too have an MDA and I like it quite a bit. Other than the size, which is understandable coming from a very small phone. For everyday tasks, the MDA works fine. I came from a Dell X51v and found that I never used 90% of the bells and whistles. Checking email is the killer app for me, and for that the MDA works very well. Of course, I got my MDA for free so the cost/performance ratio is much better for me than for many others.

I don't know what you're talking about, most of the MDA posts I've seen have been incredibly favorable, both here and at Howard Forums. Most of the complaints are from former SK users who are, honestly, clueless.

Seems like everything you have to do on an MDA involves dicking around with it one way or another. Maybe I'm misreading people's comments, but it always seems like "This doesn't work, that doesn't work, had to flash the firmware, install this, tweak that..."

Have the phone as well...pretty satisfied so far. Few complaints: 1. the light on the camera is pretty much useless. 2. Can't figure out how to disable notifications that come back after a message has been sent

$100 AR from Amazon :D

Of course you have to install things and tweak it, it runs Windows Mobile (and TMobile really fvcked up their ROM). This is a benefit to me. If I don't like the way it does something, I can change it (within limits). With the SK, you're stuck with what you got. Which is, a great device for IM and personal email. However, with the MDA, I barely even use my laptop, mp3 player or digicam anymore. It's that versatile....music, video, push email, web, gps, crappy camera :p.

There is a reg hack to disable that. I'd recommend Registry Wizard to simplify the change. You need to register at XDA Developers to download.

My UK Tm MDA Mini runs a 470MHz cpu. The 64MB of ram is BS though...it plays all movies fine but it is a slag to switch between apps and stuff if you have a movie on. You have to go free up some ram...

Most of that stuff I'm not really interested in. I'd be happy with just a Cisco VPN client, a Sametime client and Terminal Services...and the ability to develop/modify apps.

The rest of the MDAs features are overkill for me.

So sorry it doesn't support Skype. I mean how cool would that be for you to use your cellular phone with service plan and get to make free *gasp* phone calls to your friends who must be connected to the internet, all the while YOU must be in the range of a WiFi connection. Life does not get much better.
