Just bought a new car!!!

1998 Honda Civic
100,000 miles

Mechanic looked at it. Only thing wrong is that the right axle needs to be replaced.

Other than that A OK

EDIT:

PICS of old car and new Honda...

No matter what car you get, someone on AT will have something to say about it.

OP - I would say congrats, but you didn't post pics 😛

Decent car, but you probably could've gotten a better deal.

like?

This was single owner, completely clear carfax, and the mechanic took everything apart including the wheels, tires, etc... and says the only thing wrong is the axle.

I'm happy.

You got ripped off.

Oh yeah, and why is that? Seen blue book?
Don't waste your time convincing others - who is the car for? You or for some random person that might just be messing with you? I love how when a japanese car is talked about, all the european/american car fans chime in, and when of the others is talked about, the other 2 chime in as well. Don't ever expect everyone to post real opinions on cars.

If you want to hear what people think about cars, just listen to the few AT'ers who will give you an unbiased opinion. Zenmervolt is the first that came to mind.

Note: Yes, I'm being an ass, it's been a long day and people here just never get past their stupid biased opinions on every last thing.

Its my first stick too, so it'll be a good car to learn on.
Has the clutch ever been replaced?

One tip - don't downshift constantly when coming to a stop, brakes are much cheaper and easier to replace than a clutch. Be patient with learning, you'll get better soon enough.

Clutch is in good condition, but never been replaced. Shop says its no where near ready to be replaced. I trust my mechanic, gone to him for years.

Yeah, my friend told me when I want to come to a stop, just throw it into neutral and hit the brakes.

FYI, it might be my age talking though. Beaters might be more expensive these days.

How is that a beater? Its a Honda Civic

It has the horsepower of my lawnmower, over 100K miles, and costs less than $5k.

BTW, I am not a japanese car manufacturer hater. I love cars, all shapes and sizes. I own an import. I just think Honda is the Ford of japanese cars, and I don't much like Ford either. All the cars are bland, boring, and uninspiring.

umm... 100k miles and no clutch work sounds fishy. but if the mechanic says it's okay i guess it's alright. congrats on your first standard transmisson car. you'll love it.

Is he buying the car for you or himself? What does he want? If he's happy, what's the issue?

It's kind of like Bose - sure, may not be the best deal ever, but the owner may like it, in which case, does it really matter? (just for the record, I don't think civic = bose of cars)

My Accord went to 185k miles before having it changed, drove perfectly but I was having some work done and figured I'd have it changed. Depending on the driver, it can last any amount. Doesn't change that it's a used car and he may not know how it was driven.

I think it's good he's learning on this rather than a new clutch though.

I'll leave this thread now 😛
