Just bought a NAS

I just bought a mini-NAS and connected it to our home network, and had questions about the following:

1. Is it safe to leave the power on while it's connected to the router? (i.e. can someone be backing into it as we speak?)

2. If security is an issue, how can I reduce/eliminate the vulnerabilities without turning the NAS off completely?

3. How do I set it up so I can access the files from a remote location? (i.e. if I wanted to view, execute, and/or download/ftp files)

1. Should be ok assuming your router has firewall capabilities (most have NAS firewall built in).

2. If the NAS is vulnerable then all of are you systems are.

3. That actually depends on 1 and what connectivity methods the NAS device supplies.

Hardlin, thanks for the response.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router. The NAS plugs direction into the router through a RJ-45 port. Does it sound like I have some sort of built-in firewall? And I have no idea if the NAS itself has a firewall -- how do I find out if it does?
