Nope, i bought a 3bdr townhouse style condo in Palo alto in 2009 for 820k. A 2bdr in my complex sold for 1.2m about 5 months ago.

The only 3bdr for 800k i could imagine in PA would be incredibly small, old, crappy or not in PA school district. Only possibility is the Greenhouse complex on San Antonio? That place isnt too bad, haven't seen prices their lately. Think they were around 600k when i was shopping. Oh, I am not trying to stalk you, honest. 🙂

Actually, it's not that cheap as you think it is. I've been looking at places for about a year now and get all the MLS notifications regularly. Some 2 bedroom condos that I bid on that I didn't win went from 600k starting to 780k.
We should have bought much earlier last year when they were cheaper. Home prices have really started to climb up since last September.

How is Sunnyvale? My wife is being recruited by another firm and I'd love a change of scenery. The person she'd be working under lives in Sunnyvale and we know nothing about California.

Honestly you can't really tell the difference between Mountain View and Sunnyvale. No high rises at all. These cities are mostly residential except around El Camino Real with some commercial lots here and there. Sunnyvale is cheaper than Mountain View however in terms of rent but not by much. I think you'll like it here since your wife could live nearby anywhere and commute to work in Sunnyvale.
Northern California is awesome. We've got some good stuff and some great stuff. Only drawbacks here is the cost of living but salaries are much higher as well.

Its not the dollars you pay for a condo that is bad, its your soul slowly eaten away by the miscreant board and CC&R's.

Heard stories about how the housing in PA is just gobbled up by foreign investors that pay cash down (1-2M+). Can't compete with that if you need get a loan. Congrats on your new place.

Congratulations on the first home! I did that in 2010. I had been living on the coast (Monterey) for 11 years but on a single income owning a home was impossible. Average postwar cracker boxes were going for 700-800K. I moved north of Sacramento and bought basically the same size house as those for 150K. Yeah, it kind of sucks not living by the ocean anymore, but at least I have a home totally paid off. I can drive to the Bay Area in less than three hours when I want to.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective, I would rather live in a mansion in TX than in a condo in CA. But that's just me, yeah, yeah, all you TX haters F....off.

Congrats. It's nice to have a place to call home.

How's the commute? Paying more to be located closer scores big points in my book.

Commute won't change by much. I still take the same train to work. I still don't have possession of the place yet since there is a 21 day escrow close.
