Just Bought a BFG 5900nu:Some advice

Just got real lucky. I have been reading through the forum for the last few days and saw everyones comments on the 5900nu vs. various other cards. Also saw comments on the BFG Asylum 5900nu and the current deal at Best Buy (249.00 - 50.00MIR = 199.00). I checked the Best Buy website and they were all sold out of this card and the site showed that there were none to be had at any Best Buy in my State. I figured I would take a shot and drove to my local Best Buy. First glance at the counter revealed that they were indeed out of stock, however, I looked over at the counter where they keep the cases & sound cards and noticed one sitting there on the counter. I grabbed it up. Got lucky I guess. I had considered an ATI 9600 XT or 9800np earlier, but went with the 5900nu based on what I read in this forum.

Anyway here is a question. I will be installing this in my machine this weekend (replacing a Leadtek 4400 card) and I wanted to check in to see if anyone had any advice about drivers. I am planning on using the newest on Nvidia's site which is 52.16 i believe. Is this release o.k. or should I be searching for another driver release.

Bought one myself -- nice card, though it's a step down in terms of 2D from my Gainward Ti4600.

Anywy, I'd suggest you use the 52.70 drivers found here (guru3d.com), especially if you play any BF1942. Good luck and and have fun with your new card.

congrats on your new purchase, i have the 5900nu as well. i think youll be happy.since you already have nvidia installed on your pc it should be a seamless operation. just follow the install guide and you should have np. i had to upgrade my motherboard drivers as well as flash the bios.once you get it up and running check out the fx demos on nvidia site(they really show off the cards muscle)also you can get aquamark3 and 3dmark3 for benchmarking your new card.dont forget about coolbits registry tool for overclocks. good luck.

The downgrade in 2d quality Chumster mentions, concerns me somewhat. Anyone else notice anything with their 2d quality after upgrading?

I upgraded from a Gainward GF3 Ti500 and I noticed slightly BETTER 2D quality at higher resolutions. So I dunno what he's talking about.

Upgraded from a 9700np to a 5900 and noticed no difference in 2D IQ. Both cards looked nice.

Upgrade seems almost pointless to me

I went from a Geforce DDR, it's definatly better.

Never noticed it going from a 4600-5900nu

cant tell the difference from my 4200 and 5900nu.


so what are you talking about loss of 2d?

I didn't say it looks like trash, just that the 2D image isn't as sharp as it was when I had the Gainward in my box. And by sharp, I'm primarily referencing text. At my resolution (1600x1200 @ 85Hz on Samsung Syncmaster 900NF), the text is noticeably less focused when using the 5900. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad, but there is a difference. Other than that the card is great IMHO -- 3D looks goods.
