4/5 Stars:
I thought it was a great game and it WAS scary. However, immersive as it was, it lacked a beauty. I'm comparing it to Unreal, my favorite PC game of all time. Unreal had many beautiful environments that were always fresh while compiling it with a great story and a nicely composed soundtrack.
Doom had some of those creative environments in the last third of the game. Which if you were about to lose interest, might have sparked it to come back up.
Turning corners at a slow pace, and sometimes facing many monsters, although short bursts, long apart, the game does fill my heart with more blood than usual.
The game seemed to be Doom come alive, only much scarier. I've played the older Doom for the first couple of levels and it seems very comparable to this, only the story is much deeper. So Id was successful there.
The game also had plenty of action, and if that wasn't the case, the immersive levels made you feel like there was going to be action, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
There are some quirks. Such as going from light to dark, bands exist, hurts immersion. Some graphics, such as the seems in the polygons sometimes show. Physics could have been better. Last boss could have been a little harder, or taken more time to kill. The character could have had a name and someone to care for, but that might have ruined the game. Imagine, E-mails "Are you alright John", it would just kill the story. He could have at least had a name and a voice.
Edit>>Also, quirks, most of the time it feels like a 1 on 1 battle, which is a little sad, but then it changes in the later levels, but you can predict that when you see a huge amount of space.
Then ending I believe, people expected too much. Sure it was short, but at least it had an ending, HL didn't even have an ending to me. You see this guy and he gives you a choice and you take it. Just a big cliff, no ending what-so-ever. Or... at least it was smaller than doom's. What did you expect. You know, if I was the marine, I'd be darn happy. It would have been cool if we could see those graphics on earth.<<Edit
All in all, the game was great and, to me, has surpassed HL.
Edit2>>One day after beating Doom3. I feel like playing it again. It was a long game, but not long enough for me. However positive this sounds however, this could be a reaction to an end that didn't end with a huge impact - that didn't squeeze every last ounce of strength left in me. We will see what happens when I try it again.<<Edit2
