I fixed a freinds computer and he repayment is in the form of a dinner with his family.

They were serving steamed crabs. I like crabmeat but the shit you have to go though to remove crab meat is BS. He showed me how to open the crab (1). lifing up and breaking off the apron (2) removing the shell (3) removing anything that dosen't look appleasing.

I opened one crab. A whole bunch of green shit (liquid) came out from the crab (wtf is that). There were these orange things and yellow things to. It seems like I'm eating around feces. I finally get to the meat. There is this little bit of white meat (very tiny) around the arms and fins.

All that work and disgust for about a teaspoon of crabmeat.

Shit, I'll go to the grocery store and buy a can of crabmeat anyday over this....

eh....here we clean the crabs before we steam them. it is, indeed, some work beforehand, but its not nasty to eat after its cooked, its just still a bit of work. id *never* steam a whole crab and then try to eat it, ick.

you literally *were* eating around the guts of the thing. not cool. if its cooked thoroughly it probably wont hurt you, but given that you have to clean it anyway, id much rather have it done before cooking than after.

I don't know, just throwing shits out there (I saw a thread like this recently too). You know? Because growing up, I see a lot of FOBS (excuse the language, and not directed at you personally) pretend that they are disgusted with their culture, when in fact they're just got away from it and conveniently forgot their roots.

It's freaking crabs, eat it. By the way you described it, you are either 12 years old and are still believing in cooties, or just trying to be "cool". Kinda sad that you've lived that long and never seen a steamed crab...

I like crabmeat. I've bought crabmeat from the store for example and made crabcakes.

im saying clean the god damn things out before you cook them, however you cook them. because they werent cleaned prior to cooking, you had to deal with the innards when you opened them....thats what that green shit was. guts and organs. bah

clean em, steam em, cover em with some old bay and dip em in buttah.

or buy lump crab meat from a market and make crabcakes :)

thats Krab

you can actually buy lump crabmeat at a grocery store. its picked from real crabs and will be sold with other seafood like shrimp or fish fillets and such. even wal-mart carries the stuff. its probably an buck an ounce or so, and its entirely different from fake krab product.

this thread is disgusting. it thought it was going to be gross because somebody accidentally went down a girl with crabs, but no it has to be about eating the green puss from the rectum of an actual crab. GIMME A WHOPPER NOW.

screw steamed. put em out on the grill with some old bay to baste it with.

I prefer dungeness crab cause there is far more meat in the legs and I can snap the shell on those with my finger/thumb. Snow crab is to much work.

asians don't serve crab/lobster plain boiled/steamed like white people do.
just order the dish at a decent chinese restaurant if you want to see how its done. and damn its good.

you are a bit sheltered not to have had shelled crab before though

either is dryish fried or slightly sauced/gravied, depends on the restaurant. but generally its chopped up and precracked, all done for you.

I like to catch my own dungeness. Sometimes we nab the red rock crabs that have pinchers from hell.

How can you be from the Baltimore area without eating steamed crabs before? Also, this is NOT the ideal steamed crab season, so the crabs you had were probably not that large/heavy.

But aside from all of that, picking a crab can be a bit overwhelming if you have never seen it before. It also sounds like you may have been eating females if you had orange lumps in it. Steamed crabs are best in mid- to late-summer or early fall. And if I may ask...were these steamed at his house or did you go to a restaurant? If you went out, what restaurant? Steamed Crabs vary greatly between locations. If these were home-steamed, you definitely can not let this 1 experience be your guide. go to Jimmy's Seafood on Holabird Ave near Broening Highway--they have some of the best crabs in baltimore.

And fyi...the "green" liquid was probably mostly water that condensed from the steaming, and the coloration was partly from the 'guts' inside it. It looks gross, but is not what you think it is.

I've said this here many times but I won't spare you from more...

[Most] seafood is the nastiest idea ever. Whoever thought to cook insects of the ocean to eat is either dimented or from a 3rd world country with nothing better to eat (tarantulas anyone?)

I frequently go to Chinese seafood restaurants with family/friends but I have the chicken / fish dishes. Fish I can stand because it in no way looks like an insect and you're eating parts of it like a cow or a chicken. You're not sucking out it's dark insides or scooping out its brain matter. WTFnasty. Don't even get me started on shrimp. Have you people seen them floating around in the tank with their million legs? Pull the legs off, pull the head off, drop them in your mouth. Tasty treat. Yeah, right. WTFnasty.
