Well, after all the rumors, AMD finally announced today that they are going to build a new chip plant in NY. I wonder if their ties to IBM, who also has foundries in NY had any bearing on the decision. They are after all working together on process technologies for .045 and beyond.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said on Friday it will build a new $3.2 billion microprocessor factory in New York state to expand capacity for its battle against larger rival Intel Corp.

The plant would begin operation in 2010 at the earliest and would have a capacity of 20,000 wafers per month, Preston Snuggs, AMD's vice president of logic manufacturing operations, told Reuters.

New York state had offered $900 million worth of incentives in the form of cash, research and development subsidies and tax rebates, Snuggs said.

Cool!!! I wonder what type of education would you need to work there? Say just a foot in the door? Anyone know?

A BS or BA degree in computer science or electrical engineering . If you want to be in production that is. If you don't have that then you need 5-10 years in experience and some networking connections.

Highschool Diploma should get you in as a cleaner ;) otherwise what Regs said.

I wonder if this will be built for .045nm & retool into .032nm or .065nm leading to .045, hopefully the former.

Ruiz mentioned that it was being built with "32nm in mind"--this probably means that it'll be built for 45nm.

Considering the time frame AMD is aiming for a 45nm Ramp up with 32nm down the road would seem about right.
