Does SM2 look a lot worse than SM3 or something?

edit: i understand 7800gt would be better... but is it worth the extra 150 bucks?
in other words... am i gonna see a fram increase from 70 to 80 or like 50 to 80?

from the hard link

Q: 7) What aspects of the screenshots seen at the launch event are specific examples of the flexibility and power of Shader 3.0?

A: In current engine there are no visible difference between PS2.0 and PS3.0. PS3.0 is used automatically for per-pixel lighting depending on some conditions to improve speed of rendering.

Q: 8) Is the same level of image quality seen when using Shader 3.0 possible using Shader 2.0? If so, what dictates which Shader you decide to use?

A: In current generation engine quality of PS3.0 is almost the same as PS2.0. PS3.0 is used for performance optimization purposes.

SM3 isnt widely implemented yet

70 -> 80, nope.
50-> 80 hell ya.

Well I havn't experienced it myself, but supposedly sm 3.0 makes the whole experience that much better.

In what game? SM2 can produce the same results, albeit slower.

So here are my options:
Buy this (gto2) and upgrade in about 18 months
Buy 7800gt and upgrade in about 18-24 months
buy 7800gtx or a card from new ati line and upgrade in 3 years

suggestions/reasons?

i would buy the GT02

the 7800 GTX and the GT will prolly lose its power with the introduction of DX10

your just full of questions, arent you! lol

i think we will see it within 12-18 months, in which time you can upgrade to a card that supports it if you get the cheaper GTO now

Yes, GTO^2 is def the way to go right now. After D10 comes, then the new cards will be the ones to buy!

well.... the main reason i'm asking is that I want to be able to play games like FEAR, BF2, etc at really nice settings with a decent framerate (like 40+) .... is this achievable with the GTO2? Obviously i won't be able to set like TOP settings but id like to go about 1600X1200 with maybe 2XAA in BF2 or something... I know fear gets really low framerates what do you guys think i can put the settings on FEAR on for it to still be playable?

How much slower would an unlocked X800GTO^2 @ XT speeds be compared to a 7800GT? 10% slower? 15% slower? I'd personally choose saving $150, despite that.

what cpu do u have?

I always buy videocards for the current games, not the ones that are coming next year, and I don't ever want to spend more than $250 for a videocard. So when the GTO2 came out, I jumped on it.

How about option 4: wait a few days until Ati releases their new cards, and then you'll have even more choices. Also, this might bring down the prices of Nv cards. But the new x1600 might give the old 16 pipe cards a good run for their money, even the gto2, considering all the new cool features it should have.

Stuff like SM3 support, the ability to do EXR HDR with AA (other cards cant do it), full-fledged AF (not angle-dependent), h264 video acceleration, improved AA, and probably more. A stock x1600 supposedly does as good as a x800xl in 3dmark05, and with some OC it might reach x850xt levels. Of course in actual modern games, with it's newer more efficient architecture, it might even do better than an x850.
