The next night Black Sabbath played and the place was PACKED!

I was very supprized that more people didn't go to see Skynyrd.

BTW: Do you know who Lynyrd Skynyrd WAS? Where the band got it's name?

Wow. You're old. 😛

Yes, yes I am! 😉

As I recall, Lynyrd Skynyrd was their High School gym teacher?

I can't remember exactly (and I'm not going to cheat with Google or anything), but I think the name was a reference to something involving their high school. Something like the janitor or one of the teachers there maybe.

close. They named the band in...ahem..."honor" of their highschool gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who was, among other things, always yelling at them to get a haircut 😛

EDIT: and no, I didn't use google. That's just what I remember from a VH1 behind the music show.

Ahhh. I was VERY close then. I live in Alabama though, so heavy exposure of 'Sweet Home Alabama' your entire life can't help but make you know a good bit about them. Plus, my brother actually works in the music industry in Muscle Shoals and regularly works with the 'Swampers' referenced in the song.

dang im laet on the question but i know the answer(without google)

their highschool gym teacher hated the music they played (and as stated told them to cut their hair) so they named is leanard skinner which turned into lynrd skynrd...

notice i put leonard skinner in the OP.

<die hard skynrd fan. btw how many of em are still alive? gary rossington, billy powell, didnt the bass player die within the last few years? johnnie, who else?

Actually I am kind of surprised they drew even that. Before Sweet Home Alabama they were not all that well known outside the south. IIRC Sweet Home Alabama was getting heavy air play in the fall of 1974 which I beleive is when they became well known nationally.
