I heard that if you stick a 2by4 under one end it will run faster cause the electrons are flowing downhill.

that sounds quite logical: higher speeds means faster speeds so higher case means a faster one

I had a customer tell me his "modem" (He insisted calling his tower a "modem") worked better on the floor than on the desktop. Maybe he lives in the southern hemishpere??????😀
