I just bought a Ps3 and I was just wondering If the Ps3 is faster and stronger then my current pc in my sig?

I ask cause doesnt the Ps3 Have 8 Cores running at 3.2Ghz and my pc only has 4 cores running at 3.2Ghz OC'ed?

Also running Ubuntu Linux and yellow Dog Linux on Ps3 seems to be slower on the Ps3 then On my Pc but how is this true??

Thanks..

1) The PS3 has 1 core and 7 SPEs. Not 8 cores.
2) The PS3 is a machine built for gaming. It has a limited amount of memory (256MB) available to run things like Linux and Linux cannot access the PS3 graphics processor.

Queasy thanks for the fast reply.
Bummer to hear that, I feel a tad misslead then by sony's 8 core scamm.
Although while in ubuntu in system monitor it does in fact read as a dualcore system??
Anyways to the user Modeps yes it matters to me as it cost me 2-3 grand to build my Pc back when these parts were top of the line and I was thinking about spending about that much on ps3 systems and link them all together and use them in super hive Node mode.
Just think having a 8 core x 8 systems = 64 cores I would be able to encode or convert video in like less then a minute.
Plus I would of had one hell of a media server and Home folding beast.
But since it isnt a true 8 core cpu like sony claims it looks like my dreams are going to be cut short.
Oh well no biggie..

Sony doesn't claim it's 8 cores, nor is it a scam, where are you getting your info? Have you even read about the Cell architecture?

Anyway, the reason Linux runs so slowly (as was pointed out), there is a very limited amount of RAM available. I don't really do much video encoding (meaning any), but I would think this would hurt you there, too. The lack of access to the RSX - the graphics processor - can also hinder performance as IIRC ubuntu does have some UI elements that take advantage of the graphics processor, if available. However, this wouldn't hurt you in, say, Folding performance.

Calm Down Fanboy Deeko god.. I got the info right from the PS3 site in there forum section there is a info link that states this:

http://boardsus.playstation.co...d=ps3&thread.id=241683

What is the Cell and how does it benefit the consumer?
The Cell processor is the digital soul behind PLAYSTATION®3. Four years and $400 million in the making, engineers from Sony, IBM, and Toshiba have developed a microprocessor unlike any that exists today. The Cell has up to eight Synergistic Processor Units (SPUs) or "nodes" to help balance the processor workload thus making it more powerful and more efficient than traditional "single-node" processors. With this increased power, game developers can create games that shift artificial intelligence to actual intelligence. Breakthroughs in fidelity, believability, and hyper-reality enabled by the raw power of the Cell processor provide limitless experiences. PLAYSTATION®3 is the intelligent gaming system. (SCEA)

I beleive they are claiming it to be an 8core??

Now, now, there's no need for name-calling.

Sony is not claiming anything, just stating the facts of the Cell processor's architecture. I'm not going to pretend I even begin to understand the Cell hardware, but I gather that an SPU is different from a CPU.

I am not name calling I am just having a tad bit of fun by teasing him a little.
Lifes to short to get your panties in a bunch so if hes was offended I apologise.
I find it funny how people get so up tight if you mention one little negitive thing about these game system.
I am not trying to start a any fights I am just confused about this cpu/spu thing and the whole 8 cores dealy..
Now before I get bashed by all the ps3 fanboys "I own the ps3 system" and I am not bash the system in any way I just wanted to know a little more then whats stated on there home page ect...

I'm not "uptight" about the PS3 at all, and I think you misinterpreted my first response - I was responding to your calling it a "Sony scam" because initially it sounded like you knew what the Cell was.

At any rate, an SPU is an individual processing unit, but unlike a core, it does not function independantly. The main core needs to delegate tasks to the SPUs in order to take advantage of them. Thus, software needs to be written with the SPUs in mind.

??? So is it like sony's version of a new level of cach being used like 8 levels?
I gather it works like this : Cpu reads the data from the blu-ray disc but due to the high amount of blu-ray data being sent to the cpu there are huge amounts of buffer over flow data so the cpu temporarily stores or uses one of these spu's to deal with all that over flow data?
The greater the data flow the more spu's are used??
I cant seem to logically grasp the use for the Spu's..

No, they aren't memory banks, they are processing units, they just don't run independantly like an actual core would. Read the wikipedia page I posted above, it explains how it works in more detail.
