Jury orders cigarette makers to pay $145 billion in punitive damages!

[Emotional Rant On]

The cigarette makers response to this "Thats to much, it would kill the industry entirely"

YEAH THATS THE DAMN POINT ASSWHOLES, YOU FSCKING KILLED MY GRANDPA BY GETTING HIM ADDICTED TO YOUR DRUGS AND NOW YOUR GONNA GET FSCKING FSCKED JUST LIKE HE DID, SO FSCK YOU ASS-FSCK!

[Emotional Rant Off]

Thats not the point if the ever get the money or not - we are sending a message to the cigarette makers that we will no longer allow you to KILL us with your drugs, and we WILL make you pay for those you have killed.

Why the hell should a bunch of sick whiners receive a penny for inflicting disease on themselves when they knew all about the risks? Sure, maybe some of them started smoking before the hazards were known, but the AMA has known since the 1950's that smoking causes cancer and emphysema. I think 50 years is plenty of time for someone to quit smoking if he or she really wants to...

Pathetic. It's just more of the sickening, "Poor me, I deserve some money." victim culture. What ever happened to personal accountability? No one should be held responsible for these people being sick but themselves. How could someone possibly believe that any of them deserve a penny?

What's next? Lifetime alcoholics suing Miller for "causing" their cirrhosis? I might as well start drinking a glass of gasoline a day. Sure, everyone knows it harmful, but those damn oil companies aren't doing a thing to keep me from doing it, and they've known for years that ingesting gasoline is harmful. I should be able to make a killing!

Pathetic.

when they knew all about the risks?

No they didn't know the risk, ciggarette smoking was not linked to any sort of medical dissorder until the 70 and thats when people knew BIG TIME that is was time to stop.

For people lile my grandpa who started smoking in 1939 they had no clue, and by the time they knew it had already killed them or they were too addicted to stop smoking.

<< Thats not the point if the ever get the money or not - we are sending a message to the cigarette makers that we will no longer allow you to KILL us with your drugs, and we WILL make you pay for those you have killed. >>

Funny, I haven't heard any news stories about a mass of people giving up smoking. What's that? They're still smoking?!? But smoking is bad for you! Damn, we should pass laws forcing cigarrette manufacturers to put warning labels on the packs so people know it dangerous.

How are the tobacco companies killing people that voluntarily consume their products, fully aware of the risks?

Im going to have to agree with reitz, many of the people in my family were smokers but when they found out the hazards they stopped inflicting it upon themselves.

Just wait till, I sue for my bad liver Anheuser,Seegrams...

Never Deal with Stupid, fusking ,litegeous people, unless you're one of em....

Reitz,

Evidence was shown that the tobacco industry LIED about their product. They intentionally increased the nicotine in their products, and then covered it up. Also, Warning lables were not required until the late 70's, and were fought against very strongly by big tobacco. They are to be held responsible for their actions.

But you do have a point though: what to do about all the smokers out thtere now? I say make them pay for their own stupidity. The facts are well known, yet they still insist on smoking. Deny them medicare, make them pay for their own self inflicted health problems.

Okie so lets say when you found out it was bad for you, you stopped that instant. And then 10 years later you get lung cancer and they find smoke degredation to be the cause of it.

They still are killing you.

Allright, Trinitron, we'll use your statistics and arguments. Let's say no dangers were known until 1970. That's still 30 years to quit!!!

You say your grandfather started smoking in 1939 and consequently died from it (It is a tragedy, and I'm sorry for your loss and don't mean to take away from it). You say that none of the dangers were known until 1970. That would mean that the tobacco companies likely didn't know of the dangers, either. How can they be held responsible for the thirty years your grandfather smoked when everyone thought it was safe?

Too addicted to quit? That's not a very sound argument. I suppose we should all shell out more money to house, cloth, and feed heroin addicts, since they, too, are "too addicted to quit."

Your a friggin fool! Tobbaco was advertized as having no health effects and was harmless when the addictive crap and glamour of smoking befell my mother. She died of lung cancer 30 years ago.2 years ago, tobbaco executives where siiting before a congressional hearing and stating that there was no proof of harmful effects from thier product. Are you stupid or something? What the hell are you smoking? do you know what addiction means? Have you seen the ravages of cancer?

I don't feel the least bit sorry for the tobbaco industry. They duped the public, solicited kids to use thier product, knowing full well of the danger and they didn't care.It was the almighty dollar. They think they are invincable. Well guess again. And BTW,They are now paying over 250 billion on federal settlements out of court. Anyyone think they aren't hasn't got the facts.

Yes we should spend money to help people addicted to ALL typed of drugs, and like I said even those who have quit STILL die frm lung cancer.

The Tobacco companies KNEW what they were doing, they engineered their drug to become addictive.

I agree people now days, say a smoker that started in 1990 has no claim, but that still doesn't deny the fact of MILLIONS of people who became addicted before the 70's and are dying right now.

If you think that making a quick buck is more important that saving a life, your one corrupt bastard.

<< Okie so lets say when you found out it was bad for you, you stopped that instant. And then 10 years later you get lung cancer and they find smoke degredation to be the cause of it. >>

Again, not a very sound argument. The odds of contracting lung cancer as a result of smoking ten years after quitting are minute. The human body has an incredible ability to regenerate, and the damage caused by smoking is rarely permanent so long as the habit is stopped before cancer and emphysema appear.

My mother has smoked for a little over 20 years. If she quit today, in ten years her odds of developing lung cancer are almost as low as someone who never smoked a cigarrette in his life.

I very strongly dislike the tobacco companies, but even worse, IMO, are people who are unwilling to accept the consequences of their own actions. My point is, these people have known about the dangers for decades, and yet they chose to continue smoking. I feel bad that they are sick or dying, but "you make your bed, you lie in it."

Oh yeah, then how come all these people are dying of lung caner 10 and 20 years after quitting smoking? How come nicotine is found present in the lungs years after wards?

O.K. Lets just sue ,sue ,sue until cigg prices are like Norway.

Then what will happen ? more crime, death and destruction ? Lets just get the ball rolling twoard anarchy..

reitz, your style of arguments remind me of armchair politicians' arguments.

Smoking is extremely addictive, I don't think you comprehend just how addictive it is. Years after people have quit it can still be difficult to see someone light up. (BTW, at this juncture I would like to say that I have never and will never smoke a cigarette!)

Plus, they glamorize smoking by hiring beautiful models to do ads in magazines...well, next time you see one of these ads, take a look to see if the cig is lit. It isn't. They never are. Why? Photo shoots can go on for long periods of time...having a lit cigarette in your mouth for a few hours a day is VERY dangerous and VERY hazardous to ones health. Secondly, having a cigarette in your mouth for a few hours in just one day can get you addicted. Thirdly, grey smoke coming out of the cigarette takes away from the glamor of it and could turn people off. (At this juncture I would like to say that in health we studied this stuff. Also, my father smoked from age 16 (when I asked why...he didn't know...it was "cool"...) to 26 (cold turkey) or so and my grandmother used to smoke. My grandfather smoked too till he quit with the help of a hypnotist.)

In the 70s smoking was still "cool", it was not well known that it was hazardous to ones health. Only in the last two decades has it become almost common knowledge that smoking is extremely hazardous the one's health.

Tripleshot is correct too. 🙂

BTW, some trashy kids in my school think it is cool to smoke. One kid has this smokers cough- at age 14. He started horking up something nasty and proudly said with a smile..."Heh, smokers cough..."

Trinitron, my argument is not about the almighty dollar. Sure, the tobacco companies have continually lied, and have shown no concern for the ill effects of their product. For that reason, the Attorneys General of many states have filed lawsuits to recover some of the costs of treating the ill. I support those lawsuits.

What I can't support is a bunch of money-grubbing whiners who feel that since they smoked their lives away and are now paying for it, they are entitled to money. Give me a break! Why should any of them deserve one cent for their self-inflicted injuries? THEY ARE NOT VICTIMS!!! They should be held responsible for the consequences of their actions, just as anyone else would expect to be.

My mother died of lung cancer at age 38.She smoked for less than 18 years.

My mother has smoked for a little over 20 years. If she quit today, in ten years her odds of developing lung cancer are almost as low as someone who never smoked a cigarrette in his life.

You really show how ignorant you are with this statement.

You will never know how angry you have made me. Thank God I can't bitch slap you now!!

The sad thing is that you can rail against the corrupt tobacco industry all you like, and say "make 'em pay!" and the courts can set all the judgements they want...in the END the people paying these enormous amounts of money - if the fines are ever collected - will be US. There is no such thing as a "tobacco company". These are giant conglomerates that produce many other things... when the price goes up on your Oreos YOU will be paying these fines. Y'all aren't really naive enough to think these companies are going to take the financial hit, are you? Of COURSE not - they're going to pass it along to the consumers.

It takes 9 years for the lungs to go from the black of smoking for about 10 years to white again. With 20 years of smoking under your mom's belt, it will take quite a long time for her lungs to get white again.

Yes I must agree you sound quite ignorant with your fool hearty statements.

...Sure, the tobacco companies have continually lied, and have shown no concern for the ill effects of their product...

And your saying that nothing should happen to them? No offense but if your not part of the solution - your part of the problem, and with thinking like this, more people will die. When your mother, or your son dies from lung cancer caused by cigarettes you may change your mind.

It's sad though it takes a close death for some people to realise the sheep skin that has been pulled over their eyes to hide the real truth of reality - Smokeing Kills Peope - It can kill you instantly from the first Cigarette via oxygen depression. It can kill you over a long period of time via lung cancer, it can also cause chemical embalences in your brain that can lead to other medical conditions. Anyone who supports or defends this kind of murder is a fool.
