Jury Duty

I always wanted to do jury duty, especially for some crazy murder trial. I have never received a letter though. =(

Also, my current job retains the right to replace me if I am gone longer than like 30 days... =(
 
At least you can have your electronics with you. I had US District Court jury duty and they allow you to have zero electronics with you.
 
Thought getting jury duty while being paid by company to not be there was a good deal, till I had to include the "jury pay" on taxes.
 
Question:
Let's say I make ~$400 day in wages.

Do I lose those wages and have to settle for $40 day?
Do I lose vacation/personal days?

How do I get paid my normal wage without using vacation days?

If I had to burn vacation days or lose wages, this seems extremely unfair.

Most companies have to pay you while you are on jury duty. Mine has a policy where it asks if you could donate the jury duty money you get back to the company to help with the costs of you not doing your job. Although, I haven't heard of anyone that has done that.

And what happens in this case? Do you just walk out of jury duty and tell them to pound sand?
 
Never been. Got summoned at least 3 times but have always been dismissed. I got a letter from the State last year saying something like I may be contacted to be on a jury for some higher level stuff and not the local stuff but haven't been called since. I think I just tossed that letter anyways. I don't think I'd want to be on the jury for anything like a murder or violent crime. I can't watch that stuff on tv, let alone see real life pics/vid. Gets my gut all knotted up.

I knew the week before, so I sent an email saying I'd let them know as soon as I knew more. My manager didn't really care at all thankfully and I got paid for the whole week without any hassles. Part of the flexibility was due to the fact that it was a major tech company with very long deliverables where any single person's presence is practically meaningless and, actually, I was certainly a net negative at that point. He may have been happy now that I think about it.
 
Jury duty, especially for US District courts has caused self-employed people to loose their business, file for bankruptcy, and even loose their home, yet the courts merely see it as a 'duty'.
