Jury Duty

tear it up and throw it away.

haven't received a jury duty request since I ignored that last one ~10 years ago. (at the time, I financially couldn't afford to even take a day off of work to plead financial hardship before the court. living paycheck to paycheck, paid by the hour, and jury compensation in NJ isn't even enough to pay for parking at the courthouse much less balance out missing days of work)

Things are a little more advanced than they were 10 years ago.

At least in California, you can forget everything you think you know about skipping or getting out of jury duty.

If you need to send something back, send it back;
If you need to call in, call in;
If you need to show up, show up (and on time).

Counties and judges are no longer messing around. Reasons that would have gotten you sent home by the check-in clerk are now no longer good enough to have you excused from the box by the judge or lawyers.

The salad days of getting out of jury duty are over.

Trust me, I'm a lawyers 😉

No just cali either, I had a buddy of mine get a real scare put into him by a judge after he simply ignored several jury duty letters. The judge apparently got irritated and had several people (including him) hauled in by the sheriffs office and asked them why he shouldn't hold them in contempt (in jail) for a while. <gulp> I'm sure he'll be more diligent about that stuff going forward 🙂

Jury duty? LOL I have a simple solution to that; never register to vote! I'm 30 and never even saw a single notice come at me and my wife in the past 6 years has had two. Not a single part of our government works so I simply dont take part in it

I've always been registered to vote and I've never been summoned. Luckily my work is flexible enough that I could probably actually go, but that's not true for a lot of people.

Then never ever complain about our government even if Red China takes over.

BTW they draw jury pools from more than just voter lists-DMV lists are also frequently used. It's probably blind luck they haven't picked your sorry ass again, but once a decade isn't that unusal for jury duty. I went the first 30+ years of my adulthood without ever being called, then I got called three times in a decade. My wife has only been called once ever.

I tried just ignoring mine, didn't go as well as it did years ago.

Some counties in my state use property tax records, so don't ever buy a home either.

I've been called 5 times I think but not in a few years. Every time I've been called though, there is a judge who sits in the main room while they call role, then signs bench warrants for anyone who skips out. YMMV.

Become a convicted Felon, you will no longer get called for jury duty.

Not entirely true. The list they use don't always exclude felons. I've been called three times and one of the first questions they ask is who in the room are felons and they are excused.

Of the three times I was called I actually went in twice. Hardship excuse one and two months on a civil trial once. I got one of the Ford Explorer roll over cases.

I think I got jury duty notices before I registered to vote.

I never understood this argument...where in the 1st amendment does it say that free speech in contingent upon the speaker fulfilling other civic duties?

How much notice do you get in the states?

I start my UK jury duty on the 12 of August. I had about 3 months notice before the original date in June which I put back due to issues at work.

They book you for a 2 week slot which can obviously extend depending on what trial you are on at the end of your second week.

usually a month or so (at least in CA, the only state that matters).

meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Democracy is a sham. Hows communism actually different? They're at least up front about doing the same things our government does.

Day 8 of 12 tomorrow (1/month), grand jury. Hopefully it's not 8 of 24. 6 of us lucky bastards will get 2 years.

I've done grand jury.. all you do is decide whether cases should even go to trial. Only did 10 days but I wouldn't mind doing that again, if only things moved along faster. We'd sit there and wait an hour before the next case would be presented, etc.

I got called again 2 years ago and got chosen as a spare trial juror (the very last one picked). I was to report Monday then they called Sunday and said it has been settled.
