Jury Duty will ruin my life.

I got selected for jury duty and I just got employed less than 2 months ago. I called in and told them this, and the new law in NY no longer automatically excuses for employment issues. I am already afraid about losing my stability at work, and this will not help at all.

Is there any way to get out of this? I am scrared as hell since I am on a really tight budget, and cannot afford to miss any days off of work. I have been previously unemployed for a period of 2 1/2 years, and would probably kill myself if I lost this job.

The person I spoke to threatened me with a year in jail and fines if I decide not to show up.

All joking aside, I will purposefully send someone to jail just to ruin their life, or let someone who is obviously guilty go, to ruin someone else's life. I don't care.

My own life isn't worth someone else's time. :|

It's not only that, I also have a tight budget that will be thrown off if I take time off for jury duty. Who the hell can live on $40 a day.

Plus, what if the company I work for realizes they can actually do without me, during the period of my absence...

How long does jury duty last anyway?

Just talk your employer, bring the official paper with you so they know you are being truthful.

That is not the only issue, it's my budget that will be hurt also.

Odds are you will miss one day of work.

Your employer cannot legally fire you because you were called to jury duty.

So do you ever plan on taking a vacation? Want some bad news? If you died tomorrow the company would get along just fine without you. So jury duty for a couple of days isn't going to be a big deal. If a company's well being is hinged on one person you don't want to work for that company. So calm... down... It's not like you're asking for personal time off here. It's jury duty. It happens to everyone.

The only time I was ever called for Jury duty I was out of there by noon every day. After three days I didn't even have to go back. It didn't really affect my budget all that much.

I don't know how it works in NY but AFAIK you can ask to have your jury duty service postponed or rescheduled for up to a year in most places.

most employers will still continue paying your salary, as long as you give them your earnings from jury duty

I will ask about that. My bro just told me that I probably won't last even a day. I dunno, I kept thinking jury duty would last weeks or something.

LOL, that is great. I wonder what would happen if I mentioned that. Can you get fined for being a jackass, or playing around during the process?

You could be held in contempt of court for disrupting the process. But mentioning certain things that make you look biased toward the defendant (assuming you even get interviewed) or prosecution could cause one side to use a premtory challenge and have your butt booted from the proceedings.

LOL, I am just being paranoid I guess. I have been there 2 months and already taking time off? That can't look good to employers. :(

Goofing around could get you held in contempt of court, but jury nullification is somthing that to me makes perfect sense & is fully legal, so mentioning that you believe in it being right in a serious manner should be fine.

JEEBUS... you're not taking time off. You are being compelled, under the law, at the risk of jail, to perform a civic duty.

When are you required to go? The only way I can see you getting in trouble for this is if you've known about for weeks and then waited to spring it on your boss at the last minute. Otherwise, get in front of the situation, talk to your boss and go sit in a box for a few days.

And switch to de-caf
