Juror Fined For Yawning In Court

It's possible to yawn quietly.

Given his response to the judge (and then the audacity to repeat it) I'd say he probably did have a "lousy attitude."

Let it be a $100 lesson.

I fell asleep as a juror once, it was on the third day of a very very boring court case. It was also at 9 am and for someone who works 2nd shift that is really really early.

It's not completely unfounded, the juror was being obnoxious. If the juror was truly sorry the judge probably would have let it slide.

We don't know enough about the situation to call it one way or the other.

If he did it deliberately, and said "I'm sorry, I'm just bored" in a snide tone of voice, he deserved it.

If he did it accidentally, and said his excuse respectfully, he didn't deserve it.

Punk ass I'm sure. Need video to tell for sure but judges are hesitant to impose punitive measures on jurors since we already have a problem filling the box.

Well, the Judge did ask him to repeat what he said (not in so many words, but it was implied).

Or "I'm sorry?" could easily mean, "I can't believe you just said that you contemptuous bastard," or some other form of disbelief.

LOS ANGELES -- A juror was cited for contempt and fined $1,000 by a judge for yawning loudly while awaiting questioning in an attempted murder trial. The fine later was reduced to $100.

The yawn came after the man, identified as Juror No. 2386 in an April 1 court transcript, had been sitting in a courtroom for two days as part of jury selection.

"You yawned rather audibly there. As a matter of fact, it was to the point that it was contemptuous," Superior Court Judge Craig Veals said.

"I'm sorry, but I'm really bored," the juror said.

"I'm sorry?" the judge responded.

When the juror repeated his statement, he was admonished by the judge for having a "lousy" attitude. "Your boredom just cost you $1,000 I'm finding you in contempt," Veals said. "Are you quite so bored now?"
Snide punk deserved the $100 fine, for stupidity if not intentional disrespect.

Because jury duty is part of being an American citizen. You don't want to serve on a jury? Fine by me, but if you ever get arrested, screw your trial, you can be found automatically guilty.

Gotta be smarter about it since it's a civic duty to make our system fuction proper. Want to get off a jury lickty split? ask about Jury Nullification.😉

1. It's his civic duty.
2. He might be a defendant someday, especially with his attitude.
3. Behaving politely is common(?) courtesy.
4. Judges have the power to cite you for contempt and fine or imprison you.

i guess a jury does look appealing as it divides the power a bit...but still when you get called in and have to arrange your life around doing duty it really sucks. now in a lot of places you get a big ass fine if you don't show up. 🙁

Civic duty, lol, half the people don't bother to show up. My dad gets called literally every three months in Baltimore. There are enough people in the city that you should only get called once a year at the most. It's just that half the people don't show up and the courts don't do anything about it (lack of man power probably), but if you keep getting called repeatedly, you have a right to be a little pissed off. Guy still deserved it though.
