25,000 miles across, 3x the diameter of the Earth. The distances in space are so staggering; I just read this page. Presuming his calculations are correct, given a Sun the size of a soccer ball the Andromeda galaxy is 6 billion miles away, which is almost twice the distance from the real Sun to Pluto. Again, 6B miles at soccer ball scale.

Think about it!

That red spot has been there, like, forever.

Only now when mankind has developed amazing technologies and many Americans are living in houses with 10 TVs with 4 cars on their driveways and use many gallons of water just to brush their teeth - only then has this red spot started to disappear. Coincidence?? I think not!!!

It actually only appeared in the last several hundred years.

I blame universal warming. Global warming is happening at such an alarming pace it's affecting the universe!

Actually I think that spot was actually a storm, I think what's more incredible is the fact that the storm lasted that long.

I also recall reading somewhere that at some point the rings may actually vanish.

Personally, I blame Shakespeare. With all those actors saying "Out, out, damned spot!", it was bound to happen sometime. :p

Wait, does this forum really have to turn everything into a political circle jerk?

Further more, I really hope there are not this many climate change deniers. I used to think of people on forums as smart and geeks but has my opinion really changed in the last five years. A majority of these people don't believe in God (good because he is made up) but when it comes to global warming, oh no, time to throw out science just like the God fearing folks do.

I believe you are mistaken. There are few if any people who would deny there are not some "changes' going on.

The disagreements stem from the belief that humans are the primary cause of the changes. As if the world was some static, perpetual, isolated object that only filthy humans managed to contaminate.

The greenhouse effect is 100% re producible in a lab. And what do you know, humans burn fuel that causes hundreds of tons of CO2 everyday (which is a leading cause of the greenhouse effect).

I have never heard of a counter argument to this very simple scientific observation.

Wrong. Water vapor is the leading greenhouse gas. As for CO2, humans contribute a measly 4% to the global production compared to natural sources.

But anyway, I wonder if you believe so much in your new found religion do you practice what you preach? Do you drive a car? How is your computer powered? How is the food you eat produced? Or is your position that everyone else should make sacrifices for your beliefs?

Like it or not, climate change is REAL.

Climate changes. Jupiter's climate changes.

Yup...and most of the earth's surface is covered in water. If the earth gets hotter, more water evaporates. Doesn't cloud cover reflect sunlight and have a net cooling effect? It seems like that would keep an "out-of-control" greenhouse effect in-check somewhat.

Going 'off the grid' is virtually impossible, but harm reduction isn't. The world is driving around one person to a full size, quad-cab pickup. There's a lot we can do.

So you say this is false too?

It's a big ball of turbulent gas. One of the bigger swirls is finally dying down.

Jupiter's Modest Red Spot.

:hmm:
Why do I suddenly feel compelled to make a tasteless tampon joke?

It's time for the USA and the new Soviet Union under Putin to put away our differences and put forward a joined space mission to Jupiter. We can even ask the Chinese to tag along.
Just don't ask them to build anything, it'll need a warranty claim before it even reaches the launch pad.
