I hope a lot more medical groups get on this idea. If not, we'll have to pass a federal law banning junk food from teenagers and computer geeks. 🙂 You guys are too fat! 🙂 Except Red....

Anyway, a lot of schools pay for budget items with the sales of sodas and junk food. Wouldn't our Iraqi money be better spent on our own kids?

Fire-up your google and look at the amount of money being spend on education, per capita, in Washington D.C., then fire-up your google to look at where they rank in the nation...the question really becomes: Wouldn't out public education money be better spent in Iraq?

I think it would have been better spent on the Iraqi education system - a few billion bucks after the Gulf War might have made Iraqis feel a little less hateful towards the Yankee infidels... of course, hindsight is 20/20 - for a mere $50 billion we could surely have caused enough civil unrest in Iraq to toppel Saddam from within.

Passing the obvious racial implications of your post, the costs per pupil in D.C. vs. Fairfax County is only about $1,000 per pupil more. When one considers the higher incidence of special education and remedial education needs in D.C., the costs of maintaining security, the level of income of the student's parents, and the many other problems such a relatively small school system faces, I think we should continue spend our money on education in D.C. before we send it to Iraq. Admittedly, D.C. has a lot of problems and education is one of the biggest. But D.C. residents pay taxes and the last time I checked they still don't have the right to their own real representative and Senator. Also, FWIW, D.C. has the highest REVENUE per student of any jurisdiction as well.

Many of those kids eat junk food all day every day so I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't a major cause of some the learning problems they face. (All kids eat too many non-nutritional "foods", not just inner-city kids.)

Didn't we agree that kids need the best possible education, including college, so that they can compete in tomorrow's job market? (the Reich solution). Underfunding the school system isn't the best possible start is it?

...so why are they ranked at the bottom when per capita spending is near (was 1st the last time I checked, but that was 2002) the top again? because they spend more for security and have more special education children? Is this what you are telling me?

This has been going on for the past 5-10 years. Well before the Iraqi situation.

The schools use the junkfood $$$ to cover discretionary items due to lowering budgets caused by political refusal to fund the educational system properly.

Agreed that some of these $$$ problems are also caused at the Fed level due to unfunded mandates. :disgust:

Is 'teaching' an "unfunded mandate?" Or, instead, are we to continue throwing money at it in hopes that it fixes itself...the proverbial 'War on Drugs' comes to mind.

Teaching is not an unfunded mandate.
The additional paperwork/special ed/certifications/etc requirements are what I am refering to.

Teaching needs to be revamped from the ground up, with support from the community to remove the political leverage that exists within the primary school system and also for the secondary system

Federal rules also have had impacts on the schools by forcing programs into the system, however, the Feds will not provide the $$$ to support those programs/expenses. The systems must obey in order have access to Federal money which is provided for other mandates. This same problem exist within the state level; forcing local schools to meet certain requirements, even though the tax base may not exist to support them.

Example in Florida. back in the 80's, the lottery was sold to the taxpayers as supplimental money to improve the education system. Now the educational pie is being reduced and the lottery $$$ goes into the general fund. Schools are being required to meet certain grading levels justified, however, the additional resources to get to that point ar not being provided. Should the school system not meet that level, it (the system) can/will be punished.

Look, race-baiter, I am not sure from where you are drawing your inferences, but I really don't appreciate you insinuations. Firstly, I have studied education policy for a number of years and have debated ?school choice? at a number of institutions of higher learning?to do so, one must do his proverbial homework. You, sir, should do your homework and discredit my proposition/assertions if you can. Secondly, I live in D.C., so I am a bit closer to the problem than someone in, say, FLORIDA? Lastly, what are your qualifications in the education policy area? If you want to debate this issue further, clean up your act, stop making ridiculous assumptions, and send me a PM when you grow-up.

...just read your post after I responded to the D.C. education policy expert. I am glad I wasn't the only one who found the fallacies in the aforementioned post. Isn?t this coming from the same guy who is an expert in foreign exchange rates and effects appreciation/depreciation of currencies have on the global economy? Since you like to bring race into everything to hide your shortcomings, let me ask you this: What does being a "prominent black school system" have to do with the argument at hand?
