If it's got a 1 year warranty it's a good deal. The failure rate of refurbished ipods tend to be high.....

Dock just makes it a little nicer to hook up, don't really think its worth $40, though. Apple gouges on the accessory price, but $199 for the refrub 3g is a steal. If only I didn't get a 3g 30GB for $300 with a 3 year warranty from the forums a while ago :)

Also wondering what you guys think of the iPod protection features as opposed to regular MP3 players. Like I've heard things that I can't use my iPod in other computers without registering it or something, and i cant transfer certain files. Wanted to know what you people think of these things and what exactly are the restrictions. Thanks again.

Bought me one. Couldn't pass this up even though my school, SJSU, has them 15GB for 269.99+tax and a -$5.00 coupon. :)

LOL, I am pondering the very same question :p

Wife: What's this package you just received?
Me: It's an Ipod MP3 player.
Wife: You mean like that flash MP3 player you just bought a month ago? Like that PDA you got two weeks ago? Like your PC's and laptop that can play MP3's?
Me: errrr.... well....
Wife: :frown::|:roll:

Mine is more like this:

Wife: What's that?
Me: Uh...something I ordered....
Wife: An Ipod? How much was that?
Me: Um...well, it was a refurb, and they sell quick, and it was $200.
Wife: Oh yeah? And how did you pay for it?
Me: .......On..... the......credit card......
Wife: @#(*$&(#@ And how do you plan on paying for the credit card?
Me: I'll sell some stuff or something....
Wife: You better, or it's your head! Both of them!
Me: (runs to dig through my stuff to find something to sell)

Picked up one of these refurbs last time they where up there. Visually the packaging and unit it's self looked perfect. Everything was still in thier sealed packaging etc. I've only had it for about 2 weeks but so far I've been loving it and as mentioned it does have the full 1 year warranty.

As for the dock it's self it doesn't really impress me. The only useful thing on it seems to be the line out for connecting it to a stero etc. Otherwise all it is a little plastic stand with a doc connector on the back for the cable you'd just plug into the bottom of the iPod anyway. It doesn't even have a normal power connector or anything. Have to use the normal doc to firewire connector to power it from the computer or the firewire wall connector.

DaCurryman- Also wondering what you guys think of the iPod protection features as opposed to regular MP3 players. Haven't played around with this much yet but I'll try and address those answers. As far as i know the registering is only for the files downloaded from the iTunes store. To download and play the purchased files your iTunes has to be registered. Basically just logging into the store with your Username/pw. Assuming your iTunes is registered it just downloads the files to your iPod when you connect it up. As far as transfering files goes when you connect up your iPod to a computer for the first time it askes you if you want to automatically or manually sync them. If you say automatically it will automatically upload and i beleive even delete files from your ipod (roommate had this happen but i haven't seen it) so it matches your iTunes. If you say manually you can just drag and drop files on to the iPod. It won't let you copy files off in iTunes. You can however just access the drive directly since the files are just in a hiden folder. There are also numerous utilities to let you access the files on the iPod too. All in all the limitations seem pretty mild. Regular files the only thing you can't really do is copy files off the ipod to the computer in itunes but thats easily bypassable. With the DRM files from the store there are some more limitations on them but nothing that would bug me in normal usage. IE only plays on the 5 registered computers, can't burn a play list with them in it more than 5? times etc. If the drm stuff really bugs you or you want to use it on linux for example there are utilties to remove the drm protections.

Personally I think this is a pretty good deal since I don't think your ever gonna find a cheaper deal on an iPod. I had always wanted one but I don't see myself needing huge capacity and the price point was a bit high for my liking. This gave me enough space for my likings and a much better price point.

kpb...thanks a lot for your reply. I actually jumped on the deal when it was on like a month ago. I've been playing with my ipod with for a good 2 weeks now and I love it. My only squabble with it is the lack of bass response (the bass booster option on the iPod distorts sounds), but I'm trying to circumvent that with nicer headphones.

I recommend this deal for anyone sitting on the fence on whether or not to get it.

My roommate has a the same ipod and got a set of sony headphones for it. I beleive they are the same ones reviewed in http://www.anandtech.com/audio/showdoc.html?i=2071. He said they really helped the bass response.

O one more tip for the windows users. If you get one it comes mac formated so the first thing you wanna do is us the firmware updater utility to format the ipod for pcs =)

befgore I was sitting on the fence because of the price, now I'm sitting on the fence because I read something somewhere about the new 4g ipods, that are supposedly going to feature those new 60gb Toshiba microdrives. I'm also hoping they address the battery life in some new ones, but this is a great price. Good thing I am a patient man.

yes you can but there are issues. You can run till the cows come home but beware that it only reads 20 mins ahead of time. So if it shakes around on a beltclip or fanny pack it will crash after 20 mins or so. this can be solved with a good armband or making sure its stable!! dont let that be the turn-away point for you. I run with mine all the time and havent had that issues yet because i stablize it and prevent shock and shaking

IRT anybody afraid of apple's refurb

DONT BE get it!!!! aple refurbs are superior and you will not be able to tell its a refurb. you get the same warranty as a new one. Hurry b4 ts too late

Aside from the box, I can't tell this is s refurb. Copying over my collection now. This is my first firewire device, and all I got to say is, DAYUM!!! Taking about 10-15 min for about 6gigs of songs :)

I love this dang thing already and I haven't even listened to it yet!
