Jumping onto a wireless network

Hey everyone. Can't get a laptop to jump onto a wireless network thats setup in a neighbors house. I am going over to his house to look at it in a few hours, but I have never dealt with wireless before, my home networks have always been wired, which is as simple as Plug and Play. Is there a setting to allow all systems to connect to the wireless network, or a security setting i can kill to allow any computer or IP jump on the wireless network? What can i do to allow all systems to access the wireless network?

All windows XP OS

try setting ssid to ANY and connection is set to INFRASTRUCTURE mode. These may vary a bit and XP SP2 has firewall enabled by default so need to be aware of that.

Also need to consider security (WEP etc), lot's of "war drivers" around. Incredibly easy to sniff out unsecure home and business wireless networks.

On the router site, you just don't turn anything on. Leave the SSID broadcasting, don't turn on MAC filtering, don't turn on WEP/WPA, etc.

Then on the client, some just scan and find networks automatically, or you could create a default profile that just doesn't have any settings in it (or "any") which should also just find any available network when it's chosen.

The manual, check into it. Setting up wireless is only marginally more difficult than a wired LAN. Each Mfg's AP setup might vary slightly so just read the manual. Will tell you everything you need to know.
