"Jumping Games"

I cannot stand games that have a lot of jumping. It seems that quit a few games run out of ideas and insert random jumping levels or jumping assignments just to shake things up. C'mon developers you can do better than that. H2 and Serious Sam would still be great FPS without having to jump around cliffs or temples. Not that there was a lot in those games, but it really was not needed.

Of course, the worst offenders of this seems to Gamecube games involving DK, Mario and many other notable characters. Even the newest Pacman (XBox) game is nothing but a jumping contest.

Then again, maybe I don't like them that much because I usually suck at them. 🙁

I was pretty pleased with Zelda: Windwaker and Star Fox Adventures for their "jumpless" jumping system 🙂

Give me new X-Com and games with freeedom or give me BSOD.

Grand Theft Auto does not have freedom; it forces you to car jack and play anti-socially; just the other side of the game facsist coin is all.

X-Com Apoc gave the player freedom.

Just for you, CPA
Yeah, it's a jumping game, but kinda fun.

"play as a ninja trapped in a world of well-meaning, inadvertantly homicidal robots"

This is what is missing from todays PC games! There is no language anymore. Just the mindless chatter of fatalistic GI's circa 1940 something and the mindless game rag reviewers busting a nut about shaders.

You do realize that Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers were pretty much pure jumping games, right?

Yeah, but jumping in 2D sidescrolling games is a heck of a lot different than jumping in a 3D game with first person perspective or the camera above and behind the character.

Yea.. 2D platforming games are easy to deal with as are 3D games in third person mode (providing the camera is decent and there are shadows). I love platformers on consoles and the few good ones on pc but I'm not fond of jumping in first person games. It doesnt seem right to me.

See now, I agree with you on 2D - it's definitely the easiest. But I prefer first person over 3rd person... the camera never seems to be in a good position for me to judge the angle and length of the jump. With first person I at least know what direction I'm jumping in, even if I can't see what I'm landing on while I'm landing.

HL-2 is not fun with the Mario-esque hopping around on pipes. The game itself is well made, but why the obligatory kangaroo jumping that is far too prevelent in todays PC games?

"Jumping Games". . . . Does anyone else hate them?
Me? , , , no, not at all at least not in PC games as long as it is not an entire level of just jumps or a game with only checkpoint saves.

My strategy is simple:

1) Quicksave
2) Jump

3a) Reload or
3b) Repeat (if successful) . . . .

😛

😀

Thanks, that is more in line with what I was trying to say.

aaaarrrrggggghhhhhhh, that is not fun.

the developers of hl2 must have known most of their jumping scenes (the bridge, the tower at the end, the cliff) would be problems for most players because their quicksave system always seemed to save right before you started the jumping. How about making the AI better/harder and get rid of the jumping!

i guess "your way" is to NOT save, make all BUT the Last jump . . . . aieeeeee . . . *SPLAT* . . . and start all over from the checkpoint. 😛

"my way" may not be fun . . . . but the at least the frustration inherent in console jumpers is gone. 😉

I can't think of a single player game that DOESN'T do this, except for games that don't even have jumping at all.

Serious Sam had very little required jumping. Doom, Wolfenstien, BF1942, Medal of Honor also had little to no required jumping.

I love the jumping puzzles in JK2/JA. Force jump rocks.

i'm playing JKII:JO right now . . .. somehow the jumps are less painful with the Force. 😛

it's a very good game (and the jumps "fit in"). 😉
