(New London-WTNH) _ Julie Amero, a substitute teacher convicted after pornographic images appeared on a classroom computer, was granted a new trial today. Amero's lawyer says there is new evidence casting doubt on her conviction.

Outside court Amero, 40, was simply relieved, relieved because Judge Hillary Strackbein granted her attorney's motion for a new trial. William Dow, III says new evidence discovered by state police investigators after the trial discredits information presented in her trial.

"Frankly we commend the state for investigating further to determine their original computer witness was erroneous in his conclusion's about the pop-ups," Dow said. "They acted responsibly and they're to be commended for that."

Computer expert Herb Horner testified for the defense, but says he was not able to make his case.

"I had a two hour presentation of evidence that clearly shows that her dilemma was caused by pop-ups, spyware, or adware, and I was allowed to show maybe two screens," Horner said. "I stuck to the story though. I said it was pop-ups, it's pop-ups, it's pop-ups."

"We all know about porn traps, but apparently the prosecution expert witness in the case and the prosecutor and the judge did not and I don't know how that can be," said retired professor Dr. Chip Neville, who organized college professors to protest the verdict.

Attorney Dow says public pressure, especially from computer experts, influenced this second look.

"I had a great team behind me," Amero said outside court. "I feel very comfortable with the decision today."

Amero entered a not guilty plea this morning after the new trial was granted.

I still can't believe how badly this case was botched in the first place...at least they're trying to end up making the right decision rather than just blowing it off to, "oops!"

I'm confused. I haven't been following this case. If they were pop ups, why would it be her fault? Or is that the case?
