Jules Maximus (and other San Diegans): can you recommend a nice restaurant in SD area?

I remember Anxi80 mentioned in old downtown there are two really good mexican restaurants, but the whole town is under reconstruction so they are gone. Is there anyplace else.

On Saturday: My friend and I will visit Stone Brewery, the Outlet in Carlsbad, tour a bit in La Jolla beach, have dinner somewhere, and then finish the night off at Extraordinary Desserts,...

EDIT and UPDATE:

it was great! Brigantine was GREEEATTTTTTTTTTT.... food was so good I almost forgot how much the bill was :) (it was 60 bucks for two: 2 fish taco, 2 magaritas, 2 clam chowder, crab cakes, and 6 oysters on shell)
either way, the Stone Brewery's 9th Anniversay beer fest was awesome too.... soo many great beers, so little time and alcohol tolerance.

The Brigantine is pretty good down there (best fish tacos in town but that's at the bar menu). There are a ton of good restaurants in Encinitas as well. If you like Japanese/sushi I'd recommend Tomiko (also in Encinitas). In Carlsbad Vigaluccis is good, they have a nice wine selection. There are some great restaurants at La Costa Resort & Spa as well. I'll give it some more thought later.

In La Jolla there's the Marine Room and George's at the Cove. I haven't eaten at George's but I've heard good things. I'd call and make a resevation.

whao, most of them in North County? Okay, I could have lunch there instead. (that fish taco place sounds good)
I planned to checkout the nightlife at Gaslamp, so dinner that far up will be impossible.

Jules:
for Brigantine, I see they have more than one location (Coronado, San Diego at Orstow, San Diego at Shelter Island Dr, Del Mar, Escondido), which one you been to? or they are all the same?

Del Mar. It overlooks the harness track. Yeah, I'd hit them up for lunch. Fish tacos and a few beers...mmm, I'm hungry now. :p

Edit-They are all the same as far as their fish tacos/bar food, not sure about the fine dining, but I've only been to the one in Del Mar.

nah, we should be pretty drunk after coming from Stone Brewery :) so i don't think we will need any more from Brigantine.

thanks anyways, I think I got it all set up. either lunch at the Del Mar locations, or dinner at the Coronado site.

is there anything special to do in Seaport Village? I mean, I don't think I will have time to check that place out on one trip; but last time i drove passby there, it seems quite boring. Just a market and some hotels and a Kansas BBQ.

Peohes on Coronado.
If you want more excitement, try Coronado Brewing Company (again on Coronado).

cool! after Brigantine, CBC it will be!
what does Peohes serves anyways?

They relocated Casa De Pico mexican restuarants in Old town to La Mesa in grossmont Center.

yikes, La Mesa is abit too far. maybe next time... (you know any SD state parties? :) )

Edit-If you are getting buzzed, try Dicks Last Resort in the Gaslamp, or Karl Strauss Brewing Company downtown.

got it!

Nah, you are right. Seaport village is boring, a tourist trap with nothing special...

Peohes serves seafood.

Sorry, I know of no SD parties......but the gaslamp, downtown, and Pacific Beach (PB) should be crawling with students as there is UC San Diego, University of San Diego, SDSU, Point Loma College, and two independent law schools are starting new semesters!

Have fun bar hopping.

P.s. you can take a water taxi from the Marriot on Coronado to the Marriot near Seaport Village (which is near Gaslamp), or a ferry from downtown pier to Coronado landing, to avoid the DUI.

heh, sorry must've missed this thread andy. usually if its a sd thread, im all over it

anyways, glad to hear you had a good time at the brig. good suggestion by jules. and the stone brewery, only a few miles from my house. ill be glad when they relocate to escondido though because it should be larger and have a restaurant also. yea, all my old town favorites got bought up and closed up. i helped fight for them to stay, but alas! bigger money prevailed. they will reopen soon in embacardero (downtown) soon though.

 Glad to help! :D That's a lot of food! I can only manage to pack away 2 fish tacos and I'm stuffed!

Edit-The seared ahi is excellent too but at $10 a plate it can get expensive quickly.

I never been to the old ones, but they said the new one should be ready for opening in late October (they are still deciding whether to throw a Grand Opening party). The restaurant, is scheduled to open in Jan 2006.

is Casa De Pico one of them as edfcmc mentioned above?
and where is embacardero? near Horton Plaza?

humm.... seared ahi. and yeah, we ate a bit too much, the crab cake was a bit of an overkill. (10 buck for 2 piece, but it complimented the clam chowder nicely.)

honestly, it wasn't extraordinarily fabulous; but with other great food we are having, they just accentuate each other. Alone, it was a good chowder, and the crab cakes, fish taco, oyster (it's an aphrodiasiac rite? :)), and marigurita made the chowder even better.

nice, thanks for the updated info on the stone brewery.

and yeah, horton plaza is a few blocks removed from embacardero. if you take the 5 south and exit front, make the 3rd or 4th right (?) and if you follow it down it'll take you to embacardero. the new casa de pico and other bazaar del mundo shops/restaurants are going to be opening up in the vacant space that was once occupied by the old downtown police station. il be there reopening day as i was there for its closing day. they anticipate it to be ready by middle/late next year. i would go to the la mesa one, but funk driving all the way out there to wait in line for 2+ hours. i can wait for the downtown one. the wait will make it all that much more worthwhile.

anxi80: in the mean time and other than the one in La Mesa, which Mexican restaurant would you patronize? and what do you order?
