Ford Focus safety notice - Rear wheels may fall off

Safety Recall 00S31
Ford Motor Company has issued a safety warning on certain 2000 model year Focus models built at Wayne, Michigan from July 19, 1999 all the way through April 28, 2000 and Focus models built at Hermosillo, Mexico from October 4, 1999 through May 6, 2000.

The notice affects vehicles whose rear wheels have the potential off falling off due to insufficient wheel bearing clamp loads allegedly incorrectly done during the assembly process. According to Ford, Consumers may notice a "loud grinding or clunking noise from the rear of the vehicle or feel rear wheel wobble or vibration."

Ford dealers will be advised to inspect the rear wheel bearings for play and replace damaged components and install a wheel retention cap on the right rear wheel.

Escape recall # 6 - Front stabilizer bars need replacement
Published: October 2, 2000
Source: Internal Ford documents
By: Robert Lane

Certain 2000 Ford Escape models built from January 31, 2000 through July 26, 2000 will be recalled for front sway bar replacement. The recall program number is 00B56.

According to Ford documents "Certain affected vehicles were built with a front stabilizer bar that may have a high stress concentration and corrosion near the right hand attachment clamp. At the point of high stress, the powder coat paint may peel off, exposing the metal surface. With the powder coat paint protection absent, the stabilizer bar may rust at this location. The stabilizer bar is weakened due to corrosion and may eventually fracture. The potential for a fracture is most likely to occur at high mileage, during significant off-road use, and/or at a point in the vehicle's life outside of the warranty period. This action is being taken to ensure our customer's satisfaction and confidence with their 2001 model year Escape."

The front sway bar increases vehicle stability while reducing body roll while cornering or while going over bumps. If a fracture should occur handling could be severely affected.

Michigan and Mexico.. two places I'm glad I don't live.

The instant you decide to buy a Ford, you should come to expect that something will be wrong with it.

Boring
Their sales are actually up since the recall, seems like free advertising, how does the old adage go, any publicity is good publicity. AsFarAs recalls you can got any NA manufacturer and they will have lists of them for ANY type of vehicle you can think of.
Japanese vehicles have less but you pay more up front.
The choice is yours.

True, all cars have recalls, but Ford's got some real whoppers. Steering wheels potentially coming off, back wheels potentially falling off, air bags going off with no warning, ignition systems starting fires, etc.

You'd think after all these years, car manufacturers could make a completely cheap, reliable and safe product everytime. Bah, I know, my standards are too high.

The wheels of the Focus might fall off? I was going to buy one a few months ago - glad I didn't...Ford's quality sucks. Got an Acura Integra instead.
