Like board games or books are any better for socialization?
Why yes, yes they are.
Also Tonka trucks? Scooters? Army men? That stuff is so dated, and not even really useful for physical activity.
They require imagination, something that 'youts' lack in addition to socialization.
Sure, sports is as important as ever, or things like hiking, fishing, etc, but some of your suggestions sound off base.

Also "most kids are socially retarded"? Do you realize how much like an old grouch you sound?
Watch kids interact with each other when they are in a group but don't know each other. I'll give you a hint, they don't.
Kids are more social now than ever before. It is kind of annoying, actually. Go back to playing with sticks so I don't have to hear you or know you exist.
I don't call interacting online being social but, I agree it's annoying.

Sorry, pointing out how the 'youts' of today fail at life is one of my greatest pleasures. 😀

When my brother & I got our NES with Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt for Christmas, it was game over. Most memorable Christmas I've had yet.

The gift list you have going looks pretty good.

And once your dead, no one will give a single fuck.

By then, you will have taken over ownership of the "lawn that must not be tread upon." The best part is that no matter what your opinions are now, when you've reached my age, you'll think the same way I do. 😀

my nephew (6) gets spoiled with useless video games all the time.

I make sure to get him sciencey and arty stuff that we can work with together when I visit. Of course, he always wants to play mario Wii or whatever, and I oblige for a short amount of time, but maybe I'm old, used to being restricted from the NES by my parents when I was his age....I just can't justify, in any year, inundating young kids with video games. :\

yes--I play too many video games now. 😀

I spoiled my son (our first child) when he was young, much like the OP is doing. I loved playing video and computer games with him. Now that he is 21, I wish we had spent more time out in the real world doing outdoor activities.

How about a bicycle, fishing pole, football, baseball glove, sled (in snow country), soccer ball, skateboard, bb gun, woodworking tools, wood burning kit, model rockets, rock tumbler, wildlife or rocks & mineral field guides, binoculars, microscope, chemistry kit, handheld GPS (for geocaching), camping gear, telescope, pocket knife, bug collecting kit, ant farm, archery set, dome tent, stunt kite...

I gave my son a football one Christmas when he was about 14, but by that time he was much more into video games than team sports. We played catch a few times, but I had to harangue him into it each time. He's athletic, but likes the solitary sports such as running, and I blame myself that he's not as outgoing as he might have been otherwise.

When he went away for college he took his computer and Xbox with him, but left the football behind. I keep it in my room to remind me to balance the indoor and outdoor activities better with my other kids.

Merry Christmas and best wishes to you and your family. They grow up so quickly.

Some kids are naturally introverted and enjoy doing solitary activities however...

some questions from others.

he already has a DS and 3ds

he has a bike as well. we all ride bikes together around the neighborhood.

seems that alot of the people on here had some pretty horrible christmas' growing up.

I remember feeling pretty lucky getting a used NES with Super Mario Bros. when I was 5. These days kids need to have an Ipad, Wii U and all kinds of shit before they know how to read. 😛

thing is, these things are probably teaching him how to read 😛

My parents only bought books for me, they never bought toys with their money. All the toys I bought were with money earned from working part time jobs like paper delivery and passing out door knob hanging menus.

A 5 year old getting a Wii U is pretty ridiculous. My nephew is turning 5 next month, and I'm planning on getting him a bicycle so he can play outside instead of inside like the millions of obese fatass kids.

i fell like at his age he might not understand how good of a gift the wii u is and wonder why santa didn't get him more presents.
He won't have a clue, but I really think people giver better gifts than they used to. When I was a kid I yearned for a game console like my life depended on it. Nowadays a few hundred bucks seems nothing to a parent to get one so the kid gets it and just grows up not knowing the pain, the horror, the agony of being at a friend's house who has an NES and you don't and by God if only!!

I grew up with video games and computers and shit and never really played outside, I weigh 130lbs and am 5'8". I am pretty damn skinny.
Its because you smoke

Yeah my sister is begging for an data phone but no way I'm switching to a share plan and loosing my unlimited data.
I got my phone before that crisis 😀 and I was able to upgrade it.

Only because you'll be too old to know how to do anything else on your own

Damn son.

He'll shoot his eye out, that's why. Stupid moran. Clearly we don't learn from other's mistakes.

Come on OP...the Wii U is for yourself 😛 J/k

At 5 years old, it really depends on how advanced your child is. Some 5 year olds still have no clue what is going on, so you could literally get them a big box filled with plush toys or something and they would be giddy with glee
