You think people are going to take the time to sign up for a website that requires you to send in your birth certificate?

"This is allowing sites like MySpace to avoid the responsibility to make the Internet safe for children," Jason Itkin said. "MySpace knows its Web site is a playground for sexual predators. Because of that, MySpace should be doing some very basic safety precautions."

that guy said it like an f'n retard

Please, he has a very valid point, MySpace is responsible for this 13 year old of being attacked. If they had proper security measures in place this never would have happend.

What kind of security measures do you speak of?

It's not just MySpace, it's the whole internet! Everyone should be forced to submit two state-issued forms of identification, fingerprints, and a retinal scan before being allowed to access any site on the internet. Especially ATOT. Everyone knows that this place is haven for sexual perverts. Parents can't possibly protect their children from all possible internet harm!

I can't tell you how many times a day i get private messages from someone wanteing to come over for sex. its frightning! just so sad! where is ATOT to protect me! noooo! i need protection!

Molestation could have occured through any of millions of ways to communicate. That would have set a dangerous precedent. If they were successfully sued, then what, go sue every online chat avenue on the internet. People need to be sensible. It's not myspace's fault.

trial court cases are of little to no precedent. trial courts in texas are not allowed to make law. they have no discretion in it whatsoever. even if this is a federal court they would be following texas law on the matter, and federal trial courts have even less effect on texas law.

the danger would be in res judicata.

Now that the family lost the lawsuit against MySpace they are suing the phone company because they did not verify the identity and age of the girl/guy when they talked over the phone.

They should sue the girl's clothes for failing to prevent sexual assault.

Great way to kill the website.

Not to imply that I endorse litagation in situations like this, but somthing as simple as requiring a credit card authorization would take care of 99% of the age-verification problem here ... its not rocket-science! :disgust:

I couldn't care less about MySpace.com per-say either, but 'its not my fault" lawsuits like this are literally killing this country by driving up the cost of everything beyond all reason. I'm sorry the 13 y/o girl got sexually assualted & if convicted the 19 y/o should be severely punished, but speaking as a parent of two girls I'd say that the girls parents are 2ed in line in the blame department, not so much for failing to moniter her on the internet (although its NOT that hard anymore) , but for failing at teaching their daughter even a slight degree of common sense when dealing with strangers online, or anywhere else for that matter. Finally even at the tender age of 13, the girl bears some blame for what happened here ... I certainly got into enough trouble when I was 13 with NO internet in existance & although I took advantage of my age to get out most of it, I knew exactly what I was doing!

People get killed on the streets every day because there isn't enough police manpower and/or surveillance. What you gonna do about it? Nothing because upping the manpower = upping costs and no one wants to pay more.

Same goes for the internet. Myspace and other sites don't have the manpower nor the budget to constantly patrol.

Same reason why commercials about drugs tell parents to TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT DRUGS. Cuz the govt sure as hell doesn't have that kind of money to hire people to do it for them.

I do not sense any sarcasm in that statement. If you do, get your meter checked up. It might've broke when your wife said the Valentine's Day s3x last night was awesome.
