I've never made a pdf before and I was looking into using pdf995 to convert a bunch of jpegs to pdf format (I am archiving my magazine collection).

Anyone use pdf995? Will this work for what I want to do?

All you should have to do is 'print' the images to PDFs, there are multiple ways to do that but I'm not sure if pdf995 will do it.

If they are already images, converting to PDF won't add things like text search and copy or scaling (that adds more detail), you'll just be using PDF as a flipbook.

If you want to be able to search and maybe generate indices of multiple issues, you might want to buy the full Adobe product and let it scan & OCR the text portions of the magazines.

I have no idea of whether Adobe is smart enough to offer mutli-PDF indices but it's at least possible to create them later if the text is stored as text instead of as jpeg pixels. Printing and view scaling should also be cleaner for text stored as text.

Seeing as you already have them in jpeg format, you wont gain anything off of making them into pdfs. If you want the explaination on how a jpeg is stored in a pdf I can explain that it need be. Basically what you would be doing is just wrappering the jpeg into a pdf format and the only benefit to this I can see you would get is that you could put all the pages for an article into the same pdf document. I think in order to answer you question on if that will work, we need you to explain what your expected outcome from converting to pdf.

Basically I am archiving a magazine collection (500+ mags........ article only not ads). My friend did it before using PDF's (he has full acrobat) & I quite like the results. I am not patient enough to OCR all the articles and I can't afford the $600+ on a full version of Acrobat......... so I was looking at using a free version of a PDF maker and just putting all the jpegs into one pdf per issue. Indexing would be nice but I have all the index's on a database already, so that is not a problem.

yeah i'm afraid that my mom will discover the magazine collection under my bed too.

edit: more constructively, I have succesfully used wondersoft's virtual pdf printer for that sort of thing.
