A while back someone here posted some free software that would convert a jpeg or gif to a vector file for easy re-sizing without distortion.

Anyone remember what it was?

Tag for interest.

While I'm quite certain there's no such animal that will resize without distortion, there have been various approaches to accomplishing this over the years and I wouldn't mind seeing what's new with it.

I think I just found that one, and judging by it's samples, it works pretty well. Then again, the samples for those things always look like they work well :p Zoom in on the sample of the statues to see why I say there is no such animal.

Looking at the pricing you get two "tokens" (free vectorizations) when you sign up. Might be worth a shot if you're trying to vectorize line art (logo or whatever).

Yes, Standford's is quite excellent.

If you've got loads of time to kill and like Linux-ish software, Inkscape can create vector files from other types.

I know it's under Path -> Trace Bitmap.

I didn't mess with it much, but its results weren't as good as what Stanford has.
Maybe with some more tweaking it could work, but I honestly didn't spend much time with Inkscape.

Illustrator CS2+ and Fireworks 8+ have this feature. In Illustrator it is called "live trace" and fireworks its under "trace bitmap" - both work fairly well in my experience
