speaking of png files.. are their any browsers out there now that dont support them?
Not sure about IE 5.0, but I'm pretty sure that anything before that doesnt support it.

damn.. and i'm sure their a lot of people out there still with older versions becuase they dont know the first thing about upgrading.

netscape / mozilla / opera and the like all support it though?

Formerly known as VTEL, Forgent Networks acquired Compression Labs in 1997, acquiring this patent into the bargain. The patent claim was filed in 1986 but Compression Labs never pursued royalties.
Perhaps some legal types here can shed some light on this but doesn't the above hurt their case to try and start collecting royalties in 2002? I think there was a similar thing with gif and Unisys since gif uses Unisys patented LZW compression.

Don't you have to constantly defend a patent for it to remain valid? Waiting this long, letting use spread, then trying to capitalize on it sounds sort of illegal.

I do believe this will pose a problem for them. If I recall correctly, the patent holder must assert its patent rights from the start. It cannot, say, treat their patent like freeware for 10 years, distributing it willy nilly for free and without condition, and only after the product becomes popular, all of a sudden assert a patent right. It smacks of antitrust law violations to me, but I'm not an attorney so...
