Joystick problems...

My old joystick, the Interact Magnum 6, came built in with a stupid annoying bug! Durring calibration, in Windows, the little crosshair jumps up and to the left. Because it does this, it will screw up my game playing considerably. Appearently this is very common. Go here and scroll down to joysticks and Magnum 6. See where it says that second file will "Correct the problem where on certain computers where the crosshair many not stay centered during calibration" ? It never helped, not on this computer and not on my old one.

Well about a month or more ago, I was at a flee market and I found this Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro for $5. I never had a digital stick before, so I figured, eh why not? Besides, I'd been playing more games that needed joysticks recently, and it seemed like a good investment, since my old magnum 6 doesn't cut it.

My first problem with my new stick, was that Windows wouldn't detect it. It seems this is also a common problem, which there is also a fix for, one that, once again, DOESN'T WORK. Scroll down to the bottom of this page for this particular useless patch. This wasn't too huge of a problem. I made a generic stick in control panel that allows me to use all the buttons and hat on the stick itself, but not the four buttons on the bottom, or the throttle. It worked, so that was fine. But...

The dreaded Magnum 6 bug strikes again! It does the same thing that it did with my old stick durring calibration. It's so ANNOYING. No game is immune. I downloaded the Madden 2002 demo so I could play a quick game of football when I'm bored (I'd buy the full game, but I'm not much for sports games). I can't play it. When in the menu, the joystick scews things up by "moving" and...ARGH!

BTW, I have Windows ME, but I haven't got much choice on that matter at the moment.

Any advice?

Get yourself a usb-based digital joystick. Don't skimp, get a nice $100 force feedback model and be done with it. You'll have no trouble and the investment will last you through 5 new computers.

Non-digital joysticks (the kind you have to calibrate) always go bad. Sometimes you can get into them with some silicone spray, clean em out and they'll work for a while longer but inevitably they do that 'flicker' motion after a while. For microsoft joysticks you're going to have to have the software that comes with it. Otherwise you'll only get partial functionality in most cases.

I wish I could give better help than to tell you to spend some money but I think that's the answer.
