I am now convinced, based on your surmising, that Jordan is doing this for the marketing hype (despite all the criticizm it is getting him) so that other people will benefit from his marketing ploy, despite the fact that he has little to nothing to gain from all this. And boy do I hate altruistic people.

Maybe, maybe not. It's quite likely that he could have gotten anything he wanted without having to try and make a comeback.

Maybe he has told us the real reason why he's coming back - his love for the game. Maybe the other things you've mentioned (but haven't backed up - you're just surmising) are just fringe benefits.

no. i can happen. but why all of a sudden when your franchise is struggling? if he loved it that much why did he retire? and i haven't backed it up YET. time will tell.

I see Jordan as a great player, but eventually he is gonna want to keep going and his body won't let him. He accomplished a lot in basketball, I hope he can still play.

I thought partially he retired because his wife wanted to, and also because he wanted to leave at the top of his game. He later realized that he made the wrong decision, just like playing baseball was also the wrong decision.

He already told you. He loves the game, and missed it. It's just that simple. I don't understand how you can come to any other conclusion when looking at all the facts.

Jordan doesn't need the money.

He gains absolutely nothing from playing for the Wiz. Nothing. Yes, they are better. Yes, their attendance went up. So?
That's not why he came back.
You think he busted his ass all summer working out just to get a few cheers, or make some more money that he doesn't need later? Nope.

Stern was very cool to the idea of MJ coming back. The NBA didn't need MJ for ratings; they were gaining popularity anyway with the new stars.

Yes, MJ used to get all the calls, but the Bulls were not "chosen" by the NBA to win. What a load of utter crap. I don't suppose the Bulls being a better team than all the others had anything to do with it?

Others make more off Jordan than himself, and it seemed that Stern was lukewarm about the idea of his returning because it might take away from the marketing of the younger players that are the leagues future.

Another influence was probably that it must have been hell watching the current team play, knowing all along that even if he's not mj of old he could have a major impact on them improving individually and as a team just by playing with them everyday. It doesn't hurt tho to use himself to get the fans in the stadium because sellouts help the team perform better and get more emotion out of the players. Either case if he wasn't doing this primarily for himself and the challenge of it he wouldn't have put everything into preparing for it. Playing all summer etc. with nba players in chicago probably got him more excited as he realized he could still own them. Most stars that retire would love to come back because they miss it so much when retired but few could actually compete at a high level though, particularly at 39.
