I do not like this deal. As he proved with his Ryan Howard extension, GM Ruben Amaro can be a completely profligate idiot with his organization's money.

Reportedly, the contract is for $12.5 million/yr. for 4 years = $50 million, with a vesting option that could take it over $60 million.

First off, it's stupid verging on insane to give any reliever that much money for that long.

Secondly, I'm not a huge Jonathan Papelbon fan. My impression of him is that he's a meathead.

Thirdly, the Phils reportedly had a nearly completed deal with Ryan Madson for $44 million for 4 years. Even though THAT deal was at least one year too long, I'd still prefer it to this.

WTF! :colbert:

Agree, I'd be wary about this one.

But - what are the chances he ends up saving 40+ games a year for the next 4-5 years in the NL? Might be better than average.

Signing closers makes no sense unless it's mo rivera. Everyone else is interchangeable. Just look at joe nathan now. He's more or less average after his injury.

Your impression would be correct... 🙂

That being said, as a Red Sox fan I'm sad to see him go. He's been one of the top closers in the game, despite playing his entire career in the AL East. But, $50-60+ million is a LOT of money to play for a 30+ year old reliever (65-70 innings per year).

Yeah, not a a Papelbon fan. If I was a major league slugger, I'd have a hard time not laughing at him while he gives his douchey staredown.

Are the Phillies trying to be the NL Yanks? Have the Philly teams learned nothing about "dream teams"? How, with the teams in both East divisions, did the World Series come down to two Central division teams?

^^^^^^^^^^

Because the playoffs are little more than roulette. Does anyone really think that the Cards or Rangers were the best teams in their respective leagues this year? Nah.

They could have gotten Heath Bell for way cheaper at the end of last season.

Not a fan of Papsmear, his fastball doesn't have much movement. His splitter is wild. Not a fan of his 4 year deal either, it's 3 years too much.

I think it's a bad deal, which is good I guess since I'm a Giants fan (not that the future of my team is looking all that sharp) Do the Phillies really have this much cash???
