Jon Stewart's observation on the big 3 cable news networks

HomerJS

Funny stuff. Jon Stewarts take on the big 3 news cable channels, Fox, MSNBC and CNN. This gives every partisan something to pick at. Highlights the problems with all of these networks...

Great segment!

In summary...

Fox News manufacturing stories. AKA Faux News
MSNBC is infatuated with Rush Limbaugh
CNN is acting like attention whore teenagers

That's because Fox is trying to make a buck off of moral outrage, MSNBC is trying to make a buck on being outraged by moral outrage, and CNN is trying to make a buck on allowing you to weigh in with where you stand.

After watching the Fox clips I am still amazed people actually tune in and watch this piece of shit "news" organization that peddles such hatred an lies. MSNBC has a hard on for Rush. CNN has turned into the please like us network. Don't tune them in, problem long since solved.

Another reason why I mostly tune in to BBC when I am interested in world news. Stewart is a little off on CNN though. The times that I occasionally watch it, most of the hosts will dedicate a little bit of time for viewers opinions. It's definitely not as much as Stewart makes it out to be. CNN is also home to probably the most neutral/unbiased reporter - Anderson Cooper.

CNN has way too much 'ireport' (WITNESSES GODDAMNIT!), way too much celebrity coverage (though it's not as bad as ESPN's brett favre coverage), far too many graphics on the screen, nancy grace, campbell brown is an idiot, wolf blitzer's name is so fake i want to puke, and yet it's about the only tv news i'll watch because all the others are just so much worse. i pretty much get all my news from news.google.com, reuters front page, and the first couple sections of the local paper.

Actually not. The public should have quality mainstream news, and the problems leading to the bad news are not fixed yet, and the bad shows have a harmful effect on the public.

There's a reason the founding fathers put the press in the first amendment and viewed it as essential to a working democracy.

In the robber baron era, robber barons corrupted the media; now in the corporatized culture, corporatism has destroyed much of the news function.

Want to help? Support sites like www.salon.com, support media watchdog groups like right-wing media watchdog www.mediamatters.org, support PBS (Frontline, Bill Moyers).

Pay for your news a little - if you aren't paying for it, someone who has another agenda is, and you are not going necessariy going to get good info.

You find outstanding information and commentary like Glenn Greenwald on Salon - not on fluffy news, very rarely on cable.

cable news is entertainment... it wasn't this bad, but it was certainly made worse when fox news was created and the other channels started to blur the line between entertainment and news to catchup.

NPR is the best news source. It might be 'boring' for the lowest common denominator, but it's quite intellectually stimulating (no wonder republicans hate it).

I'm a republican and I listen to NPR, actually all of my GOP friends listen to NPR, we also watch foxnews too because I don't want to see the obama worship that goes on 24/7 on MSNBC and CNN

Yeah, all I ever see Lou Dobbs doing is kissing Obama's ass.

Wait, what.

Instead you want to see a network with an equally ridiculous bias in the OTHER direction? That seems kinda stupid to me. If you don't want to watch MSNBC or CNN because you think they have an unfair liberal bias, I might disagree, but I respect your decision. But if your alternative is a network that has a blatant conservative bias, it looks like your objection is less that the networks you refuse to watch worship one side and more than they don't worship the side YOU happen to agree with.

I mean, watch whatever you like, but I got to say...Republicans who bitch about "media bias" but like Fox News instantly drop any credibility they might have had in a media bias debate.

Quality of news programs is best measured by number of viewers? Don't get me wrong, Fox News deserves kudos as a well run BUSINESS, but that doesn't mean they're any good as journalists. Just look at your list...the top 3 slots are taken by "news" programs that don't even PRETEND to be fair, accurate or unbiased. What does that suggest about the rest of the list?

Yeah and McDonalds is the #1 restaurant in the world. So what's your point?

Although Fox News does get higher ratings than the other two cable news networks, they aren't even close to what Rush Limbaugh gets.

per Wiki:

"As of 2006, Arbitron ratings indicated that The Rush Limbaugh Show had a minimum weekly audience of 13.5 million listeners, making it the largest radio talk show audience in the United States."

There's probably a Howard Stern factor, where people want to know what Rush will say next etc, and even those from the opposite or a more moderate sphere of the political arena listen, even if they hold their nose while doing so.

Which sentence do you want us to follow? The Second contradicts the fist. Even MSNBC calls MediaMatters LIBERAL. Wow if MSNBC calls them liberal I guess they are uberliberal. More doublespeak from the left.

You're a boob. When you have one dissenting voice that roughly 50% of America wants to hear opposed to the all the other news outlets that lean left it is to be expected. The right doesn't have the shear volume of media outlets. If not for Fox the news would be one big Obama circle jerk. Is that not almost state run media? Fox has warts but to say that it is the worst is not being fair, honest or unbiased.

I wouldn't say they are stupid, they just want to hear someone try to justify their beliefs instead of hearing the news. Out of all those listed only Shepard Smith seems to have journalistic integrity (maybe even Neil Cavuto to a certain degree). The rest are fucking clowns. I could be wrong about Smith and Cavuto though as I only watch them when there's a You tube link in this forum.

Funny thing is the top 3 (plus 7 and 10 the lone libbie program) shouldn't be classified as pure news they would even tell you they are commentators. They are not journalists. This isn't a secret. Trying to propgate that and then slam it is silly. Hell If you look at it this way the #1 news show for libblies "Countdown"is no better but just not popular. Hell Olberman used to be on ESPN saying "YATZEE" when a ball left the ballpark. Would I classify that as news from a Journalist? not quite.

And to say those that watch just want to have someone justify their beliefs implies only the other side reports pure unbiased news which I am sure you would agree MSNBC,CNN,NBC,ABC and especially CBS does not do. People on the other side are just as guilty as Fox is. Hell CBS knowingly manufactured evidence on a sitting president. Regardless of party affiliation you should not take this outlet of news w/o a grain of salt for some time after that. The other stations also don't get the ratings/advertising dollars that Fox does. And they hate them for it.

At least you admit you could be wrong. You should listen to all the news networks and make your own decision on what you are seeing. There is almost no undigested raw news that isn't prepacked with an angle some someone. Hell even live remotes sometimes a journalist goes in so closed minded you can see that it is bullshit even while the the tape is rolling and the opposite is happening right behind them.

That's why I prefer to get my news from the Net, all Broadcast news is biased. Fox news would be acceptable if they got rid of all the pinched faced harpies like Hannity, O'Riely,Beck, the 3 stooges in the Morning and a few others. In fact if they got rid of Roger Ailes their credibility would increase 10 fold.
