Joint Operations demo performance?

I just downloaded the Joint Ops demo, and it seems like it could be a good game, but performance is absolutely horrible.
When just walking around, I get semi-decent FPS most of the time, and perfectly fluent at other times.
When things start to happen though, many players around, shooting, or just large environments, the FPS drops to virtual unplayability, I'd guess 10-15 FPS, 20 max.
I've even set everything to low, including running at 640x480, very slightly better, but still way below what I'd considder playable.

Exact computer specs are in my rigs page, but a quick rundown:
Athlon XP(TBred) at 2 GHz
Radeon 9800NP@325/325
512 MB of PC3200
Audigy2
Asus A7N8X(nForce2).

It plays fine on my comp, I use 2x antialiasing + everything on max, and it still plays reasonably good. It gets jerky sometimes when there are a lot of explosions around, but thats mostly because of the antialiasing. Try disabling the shadows all together, that might help a little.

Oh and these are my specs:
Athlon XP 2500+
Windows XP pro SP2
BFG Nvidia fx5900
512mb(256x2) of PC3200
NF7-S 2.0 mobo from Abit
