I see no reason why all your assets before the marraige can't be played in your own account, then have a joint account thereafter.

Not having a joint account means you aren't really commited to the marriage IMHO.

But financial issues are the main reason for ~50% of divorces. Given the divorce rate of ~50%, that's 1 in 4 marriages fail because of finances. Perhaps this is a good way to side step that.

..or make financial problems a hell of a lot worse

You could always solve this problem like Dave and I do... I don't care about money...he's better at managing it than I am anyway... He loves to spoil me rotten, he always asks if I need any cash,,, so why do we need seperate accounts, I expect it to be the same when we are married... He can handle all the money...

I am not and have not been married, but from just thinking about the question, I cannot decide what I would do if I were. I understand that having a joint account is a sign of trust in the relationship, and I can see some practical reasons (what if the husband or wife lost their job? If there were separate accounts, getting money for everyday expenses would become a PITA if the other person ran out of money in their account).

On the other hand, it would seem all too easy for one person with bad money management to do something stupid that could totally ruin both people financially if they had a joint account. At least with separate accounts, the person with money could hopefully bail them out. Also as others have mentioned, it would seem all too easy for one to just take the money and leave in a joint account. Just because you trust they would never do it now, doesn't mean they wouldn't several years later if they are bitter and things aren't working out very well. Then again I have never been in a relationship where I completely trusted the girl, so obviously that affects my opinion.

Again I am not and have never been married, but I think this is a good question and decided to throw in my $.02.

I hope you figure it out before getting married!

If you don't trust him/her don't get married...
There it is in a nutshell. If you have even a tinge of doubt about your spouse, your marraige is built on a feeble foundation.
