There are two keys to making Twitter useful and interesting.

1) Only follow people you're actually interested in. Don't just follow people for the sake of it. Follow bloggers you like, people you know IRL, celerities you're interesting in, etc. I will personally instantly unfollow anyone who tweets about what they're eating, bathroom tweets or the traffic/weather.

2) Search. This is where Twitter shines. Use a good Twitter client like Twirl or Tweetdeck and do searches for things like your home town, local sports teams, breaking news items, etc. You'll find some very interesting conversation and it's a great source of links. I have even met a few people in the city I live in from Twitter.

For example I saw a tweet about some guys setting up a hacker space in my city. I didn't know what it was so I googled it, found it interesting and went to meet them. There are bar meetups, coffee meets, there is so much going on if you have your ear to the ground. And this is in shitty Christchurch, if you're in a busy metro in the USA there must be an insane amount of cool things happening, and Twitter could be your key to finding them.

I would only use it to see what my fav celeb or athlete is doing (like the time Ovechkin twittered during the All Star Game and how he went to dinner with some players after). I don't see the point in twittering myself... 1) I'm not that exciting and 2) WhoTF would care that much about what I'm doing right then? At least Facebook you can interact and get comments on thoughts you're sharing.

I don't use the text message portion of Twitter. Can someone that does explain something to me. If you follow a ton of people on Twitter, does your phone basically TXT all damn day?

Stalking celebrities is the only reason my browser history has any "twitter" related site in it.

Which makes it less lame how? I think most blogs have text messaging updates too. And most phones have internet too.

I think Twitter is pretty lame too, but you have to be dense not to understand its appeal. Instead of overwhelming you with information, it forces the poster to convey their message succinctly. It translates directly from the texting culture we live in today and, despite the fact that I think it's lame, it's immensely popular.
