You may already have joined the TA RC5 team, if not, please ignore this post (I know none of you will :p). There is currently an Anandtech sponsored team working on the distributed.net effort to crack a message encrypted via the RC5-64 method. An inovative idea is being used to "brute force" this message by trying various 64bit keys until one works. This is done by spreading out sections of keys to various personal computers and having them crack those sections. This is completely legal and in fact encouraged by the originator of the message, so as to prove the strength of their encryption algorythm. The reason for this is to prove that 64 bit encryption is insignifigant and that the government should rethink its policys on encryption.

There are a number of other benefits to joining, you meet people in the Anandtech distributed computing program, you have a chance of winning 1000$ if your machine cracks it, checking stats and "racing" against other people is extremely fun, and on top of all this you prove the worth of the unused computing power of peoples personal computers.

One untrue comment many people make is that you must leave your computers running 24-7 to run this, that is not true, you just use your computer normally and the program automatically runs when the processor is not at 100% utilization.

If you are interested in joining check out the team anandtech website, and the Anandtech introduction. Thank you for your time,

Lets not forget the other project we are participating in. If rc5 is not your bag, try ogr, gamma flux, or seti.

Diffusion, try spacing your paragraph out a bit more ;)

I would've 5 computers cracking RC5, but I've shut down all but 1. I think saving power is more important (plus I live in CA).

Heres the thing, do you normally use all 5? If anyone uses them, leave RC5 running, just don't leave them on non-stop. That is the way the project was originally intended. If you have 5 machines, but only every use 1 and the other 4 sit in a closet, send them to me, I wouldn't mind them ;P. But yes, saving power is important, if you leave the machines on all day anyway, running RC5 is good, but if you don't, it still helps a lot.

I think if ppl wanted to join rc5 they would go to the distributing computing forum..I personally had it running for a month or two and I just stopped my celeron wasnt helping anyone out. IMHO

well, 1 is for internet (always on for serving the other machines), 1 is for game, 1 is for dvd, 2 laptops, and I usually just leave them all on, but obviously, I only can use one at a time.

Yes, however, many people do not realize that the distributed computing forum is there, or what distributed computing is. Beat, if they are all on anyway, why not keep distributed.net running? I mean, the power supply will draw the same amount of power one way or the other... 1 celeron does in fact help, you see on the stats all these people who get 80k blocks in a day, but all the people just running 1 machine out way them. Anyway, my .02$.

My humble 7 Pentium 166 are helping out. So nevermind, every little bit helps. :D

(quote) I think saving power is more important (end quote)
(quote) I usually just leave them all on, (end quote)

So you're going to leave them all cracking, right ;). Don't mean to offend, but you just said two contradictory things, if you don't wan't to, thats ok, but we really would appreciate it.

Hmm... its true that many people do know about the distributed computing forum, but I just PMed someone who asked me how to join based upon this thread, it does help ;).

I usually leave them on.
But now isn't a usual time, cuz of all the power problem. So its off for now.
I guess I just assumed that you know its unusual right now ... they even turn off 1/2 the lights
at work!
And yes, when power were plentiful, all 5 go cracking.

(I've been doing RC5 for > 2 years:))

I've been cracking RC5 for TA since the summer. My numbers kinda blow because I am running it on a single system that also cracks SETI. But, within a month I will have my dual P3 rig online. It will run RC5, and I'll keep SETI on the current system.

Although (a) the DPC's are going to beat us into a "swirling vortex of pain and suffering" quite soon, and (b) that new HS/F I put on the Duron is going to keep me up at night.... I still crack;). Sometimes when I turn my computer off for a little while, I feel like I'm a traitor to AT. "KEEP THAT THING ON!!:|" Oh no, it's Anand, he's coming for me, and he's MAD!!

Anywho, I'm a nef, and I think my ~1000 blocks a day benefit not only AT, but the whole of humanity. Thank you.

HeHe. You too? The other day I was listening to a music CD on one of my systems, when it suddenly occured to me that Media Player was taking CPU cycles. I jumped up, ran accross the room, and stopped the music!:D

Some of you are on these forums 24/7. Why don't you give something back to the Forums and AnandTech. You know who you are.

Every block counts.

WU per day chart

According to this chart, celeron 500 will do 450 Works units a day. yes 450. That does make a difference.

And if you happen to run a mac G4, for those same 500 Mhz, you can get an astounding 1400 WU a day @ 4.3 Mkeys/sec!!! Amazing isnt it :)

Durons and athlons also do very well.

600 Mhz athlon/duron will give you a nice 2 Mkey/sec @ 656 WU a day.

WU = Work Units

I think we have the potential to get more members than the DPC. We just gotta get then cracking.

Hey, there are 40000 members to the forums, and only 2600 members of team anandtech, assuming that only 10000 members post anymore (conjecture), and 5000 either hate distributed computing programs or are on another team, we have our work set out for us!

It seems that the Anandtech team only has approximatly 30 days before we loose the lead in the RC5 competition, so if you are wondering whether or not to join the team, everything helps! We need to convert as many machines as possible over to prevent the Anandtech team from slipping to second place.
