Are you seriously that old? AAC would have put you in WWII right? In any case, it's good to have you around. A depressing number of WWII vets die every day, I like to know there's still some that are active out there :^)

Btw, the best scotch is Laphroaig, especially some of the third party bottleings, and their own natural offerings :^P

I'm a big fan of some of the Laphroaigs these days (the 16 year is nice and not too outrageously priced), though Lagavulin is very nice too.

For a new drinker of single malt, a reasonably priced and easy drinking scotch is the Glenfiddich 15 year. Should be available for under $60 in the US and goes down very nicely.

1) Drink from a plethora of mass market or bar scotches like Grants, Scorsby, Passport, J&B, Cutty Sark (ick) etc that you can get at any drugstore/liquor store.
2) Graduate to the higher quality or sometimes just higher priced mass market blends - Dewers, Chevas, Johnnie Walker etc
3) Reach stardom and fame by displaying their collection of 'premium' blends - JW Blue, Gold or Green and displaying it proudly like a badge (while still getting a much better bottle)
4) Buy into the 'single malt experience by buying a mass market bottle of Glenlivet and thinking that is what it is all about
5) Starting the never ending journey of wonder by researching and actually buying several bottles of REALLY nice Single Malt and maybe blending your own as well ? You will probably end up with some for daily sipping in the <$50 bottle category and some for special occassions or moods that cost upwards from that.

Look up Talisker, Highland Park or Lagavulin - another Diageo brand (the parent of Johnnie Walker and a dozen or so other common liquors like Captain Morgan)
as well as lots and lots of others, before long you will find you are an expert on the GEOGRAPHY of Scotland as well. Then you are doomed. There is NO going back.

FWIW & IMHO

Whisky Ratings

Glenlivet 12yo is hardly a slouch, though the ones you listed are probably better (especially the ~15yo ones). However, they cost nearly twice as much per bottle so as a college student it's a wee bit out of my reach ;)

Bourbon on the other hand is a completely different animal...

If this thread gets diverted into bourbons, I'm going to have to get involved. :)

Bourbon and rye are my preferences these days, and you can still get high quality bottles of either kind for under $25. Even in Cambridge! Or in NH if you have a car, the state-run liqour store prices are impossible to beat.

i never understood why people spent so much money on blue...some of my friends who drink alot always tell me that it tastes much much better etc....still i never understood it...

then one day my boss takes me to club and buys 5 bottles of blue for 8 guys. we got totally smashed. i woke up the next day feeling perfectly fine. no hangover whatsoever.

since then i probably have had blue about 10 times and each time has been good

Fixed. :)

By the way, I think the JW blue is sold pretty frequently around here under $200. The liquor store around the corner from me has it for $169. Costco is still the best price I know, but it's not the steal you might think it is...just the best price in town.

That's what I was going to say!

I like to drink John Begg Old Scotch Whisky. It was my father's favorite. How many times he asked me to go and fix him a drink and I'd sneak a sip for myself.

Nice...not in VA though :( The idea of costco selling liqor was such a foreign concept to me I didn't know what you were talking about at first :)

That sounds about as credible as newbie white guys just discovering sake and claiming how it causes no hang over whatsoever.

Hangover is caused from dehydration that is directly related to your body processing alcohol. Doesn't matter what kind of a fine drink you're drinking. If you didn't get hung over you either a) didn't get smashed, b) your body was sufficiently hydraded.

Not if it comes out of a blue bottle. Didn't you see The Waterboy?

I'm not sure about that. There's more to alcoholic beverages than just the chemical compound of alcohol. There's byproducts created during the fermenting/distilling process that could have positive/negative consequences in different people.

I've never gotten a headache from drinking, but most kinds of alcohol will give me an upset stomach. I can drink scotch and Irish until I pass out, and get up the next day feeling fine. Just about any other kind of alcohol will have me puking for a good portion of the next day.

Where can you get a handle of the Captain for $21? I count myself lucky if it's under $30 here in The People's Republic of Cambridge....

I do enjoy the occasional sip of Whiskey but being in college seriously limits what I can afford. That said, I'm still enjoying reading your thoughts on the matter. Keep the amateur guides to Whiskey coming!

If you have a car, get on 93N and head for NH. Better prices all around.
