Johnny Walker Black vs. Red

I've had Johnny Walker Black, and I love it (esp. with ginger ale). I've never had Red, but I need to pick up some Johnny Walker and was wondering if Red is almost as good as Black, considering it's the cheapest of the JWs.

<===Took a Johnny Walker Scotch tasting course.

Hmm... since this is a purchase for a party, I'm guessing virtually everyone will be mixing with either Coke or Ginger Ale. I guess Red would be fine then? I think there's like a $20-$25 price difference between 'em for the 1.75 liter version.

Gold?!? Never heard of it. That must be really expensive! Those JW people must have hid it from us.

Blue is more expensive than Gold.

Yup, Gold is in between Black and Blue in terms of age.

i hear things about a GREEN label too... anyone know anything about this?

I took the course 5 years ago. I guess they didn't have Gold back then.

Scotch is very interesting. Lots of little differences between them especially with the single malts.

For mixing purposes, go for the Red.

Ugh... I can't stomach the stuff. I've turned down shots of it in favor of shots of Everclear before.

gold is in between black and blue. I heard rumors of a green too, but have never actually seen it. I gotta a bottle of the blue at home about halfway done. 😛

Hmm... a friend of mine compared JW Red to Jack Daniels in terms of quality. Now I'm debating between these two. I've seen more ppl. order Jack&Coke than JW, now that I think about it.

I believe all of the JWs are blended scotches.... so none are single malts.

I have never had Blue, but think I will try some at a bar before i go out and plop down that much money.

They're all blends.

Red = young enough they don't say how long it's aged
Black = 12 years
Gold = 18 years
Blue = 30 years

Personally, if I'm going to spend that much money on Scotch, I want something with a little personality. Blends are fine for sipping, but I'll take a Macallan 18 or Glenrothes single barrel over JW Blue any day.

RishiS- scotch + ginger ale? Yuck.

Macallan 18. mmmmmmmmmmm
If you like Macallan, you may like some of the small-batch bourbons that are available. They're somewhat similar in flavor (tho minus the scotch "bite" of course). Check out Basil Hayden, Hirsch, or Bookers.

i hate Red Label...it's gotta be at least Black...

got my own little collection of Black, Blue and Green...and Glenlivet american white oak

you can only get Green from duty free, got mine while in Heathrow(sp?) airport...
and tho it's known as Green Label...the bottle just says Pure Malt...aged 15 yrs...

I drink the red on the rocks, but then again I like Jim Beam too. Johnny Begg is my fav though.
the black is good too, but I have never had the blue. Ppl have told me that the blue is delicious.

I saw green when I was in switzerland and it was expensive as hell. I dont know how old it is though.... any of you know? how old are all of the scotchs?
