I don't watch MTV anymore, not since the 20th century, anyway.
But I heard about Johnny Cash's cover of the NiN song, 'Hurt' getting six nominations for the MTV awards (CNN link).

I googled it and found a website that is hosting it, actually two:

Here is one that works: link1

And the one from the director of the video: link2

I grew up listening to the 'Man in Black.' Watching him the way he is now made me feel my own mortality. Wow.

a very good cover. I think Cash added a whole new dimension to the song and really recreated the atmosphere of it.

I really don't understand why everyone thinks this is such a great cover. I find his version to be extremely awful. It just doesn't go.

NIN:
I wear my crown of sh*t

Cash:
I wear my crown of thorns

I am sorry but that changes the song completely. I prefer covers to stay true to the spirit of the songs and the Cash version doesn't. If you like it that is fine but I don't like it.

I like the NIN better, but Cash's version made it sound like I was going to be reading his obituary the next day.

no, not really.

Well I guess you don't read much into symbolism do you? If it didn't mean anything to the song then Cash wouldn't have changed it. He changed it because he wanted to change the tone and the meaning of the song.

Cash version is 10x better than nin. nin could have added thorns, but no they had to be white trash and cuss! A crown of thorns has so much more meaning, it relates to all the pain that he is going through, just as Jesus went through when they smashed a crown of thorns on his head.

I just listened to the original. I guess I am over my infatuation of NiN, because it sounds like Trent whining and being all pathetic - like he just got dumped. With Cash, you get someone who is at the end of a long life wanting to change the past.

I agree the song is much smoother and flows on the original, though.

LOL it had NOTHING to do with cussing. At least you can see the symbolism with Cash's version but you totally don't comprehend the NIN version.

What is the point of covering a song if nothing is changed? I prefer covers to add some sort of depth and new meaning to the original.

BTW, i'm 21 and not a country fan.
