When songs are covered, it is not necessarily supposed to be an attempt to 'capture' the exact meaning that people derived from it as done by the original artist. The cover artist brings something different to it because its now coming from their personally unique experiences and feelings.

The video is powerful and I think it very well may impart something to the song that NIN fans may not think is 'correct' based on the personal connection they made with the song as performed by NIN. That's perfectly ok. Its not being done by NIN, its being done by Cash.

That is true. I guess I just can't like the Cash version as much because I love Trent's version too much :)

I have to respect Cash in doing it though. He really did put his own spin on it and showed that the song touched him. He covered it as it related it to his life. I think that's the reason I really respect his version because isn't that what we all try to do? We all make our music relate to our lives personally so it has more meaning. Cash just was able to record and publish it and I bet that his version has more meaning to him than anyone else. That's the reason I respect his version.

I'd also like to point out that if Trent Reznor really didnt like what Cash did to it, he would not have let it be released. It is, after all, his song.
I bet he likes the Royalty checks he receives from it!

That is true. I read that Trent did like what he did to it. I think it's for similar reasons why I respected Cash's version. It's because he took the song to heart and made it his own. You have to like a person who loves your music and wants to make it their own.

who wouldn't be honored to have Johnny Cash do a cover? Reznor must've been beside himself. The Cash version is awesome. Solidifies the work with reality. Makes me think that Reznor was merely singing about things he couldn't possibly understand. Cash has been doing covers from younger artists for a long time. He is one of the few humble artists left.

I am not all that knowledgable about how the royalty thing works but would Cash not have contacted Reznor first to see if he could get permission to do a cover?

If that is the case, Reznor probably would have been honored to let him cover it. By all means, Cash is a music idol. Reznor might have never heard the cover until it was completed and it had been released.

I could be totally wrong with how these things happen. I just figure that an artist would get permission first before wasting time working on a cover then not be allowed to release it.

No, NIN isnt deep or meaningful. They simply found a particular genre of music to sing and become famous instead of being stuck in movies singin crap music in the background.

Cash's remix is genious. First time I saw it I was blown away, just amazed. Simplicity and genious is all i could think.

You sir, just made my list of people whose opinion I shall no longer pay attention to.

I enjoyed the video, but I think he totally changed the song by adding thorns in there. It basically goes against Trent's beliefs on God just so Cash can relate his story to Jesus or something. If you don't believe me, listen to Heresy or Terrible Lie. Without the video, I think the song falls apart. If you can find a live version of NIN doing Hurt, it is so much better than anything else you've heard of that song. Just my opinion...

Glad your so open minded and understanding.
Let me expand.... I love NIN. One of my favorite bands EVAR! Seriously. Played Downward spiral for 9 hours straight on an intense trip on time. So, this isnt coming from a NIN hater by any means. But simply put, Trent writes music that appeals to the masses. He found his genre and ran with it. Did a wonderful job. But the songs he sings have very little depth or meaning insofar as applying to live changing experiences or coming from a person with depth themselves in regard to Cash.
Trent sang a song. A great song at that. Cash gave it meaning. He gave it depth it didnt have and never would have.
My reference to NIN being in B rated movies as half assed country singers is simply to point out that Trent has, in the past, NOT had a niche. He hasnt ALWAYS been true to his roots in musical style. Not so with Cash. As I said, Trent found something and ran with it. So trying to say he's oh-so-deep or read into his music is to me assinine. It slike Manson. Manson does it for shock value. Trent did it for the money and fame. Cash never sold out to another, he's remained true to his roots. And the song as he did it goes far beyond anything Trent has ever done.

Course, you give my opinion no value and wont listen to what I say. Put the blinders on my friend and live in your little world, I really care not. Full speed ahead and hope for the best I guess.

I personally enjoy both versions.

The NiN version is more piss & vinegar.

Johnny Cash version is more mournful.

Well I loved the JC song. (And I'm 'only' 26 BTW.) Its a GREAT cover. Hey, if ya don't like it, then ya just don't like the cover or JC I guess.

But man that VIDEO is haunting, and depressing. BTW, who is the woman in that video? Is that supposed to be his wife (I thought she just died) or his sister? I haven't felt that depressed after watching a video since I saw the No Doubt Simple Kinda Life.

I think the pic on the wall is his mom, the lady in the video is his wife who died shortly after the video filming.

I think that it is interesting after watching all the retrospection that was on the TV this weekend, that Trent Reznor had said that he sings the song and it is "his song." But after hearing and watching Cash do it, it no longer belonged to Trent. Now, he says, that when he will sing it, it won't be a NIN song, but a Johnny Cash song.
