John Walton Dies in Plane Crash

ohn Walton, the billionaire son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and a member of the company's board, died Monday in a plane crash in Wyoming.

Walton, 58, of Jackson, Wyo., was piloting an ultralight that crashed shortly after takeoff from the Jackson Hole Airport in Grand Teton National Park, the company said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of the afternoon crash was not known, officials said.

The plane was an experimental ultralight aircraft with a small, gasoline-powered engine and wings wrapped in fabric similar to heavy-duty sail cloth, officials said.

In March, Forbes Magazine listed John Walton as No. 11 on its list of the world's richest people with a net worth of $18.2 billion. He was tied with his brother Jim, one spot behind his bother Rob, and just ahead of his sister Alice and his mother Helen.

Walton joined the board of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in 1992, but did not work for the company.

"We're sad that John Walton, who was well-known and much-loved in this valley, died doing something that he loved to do, which was fly aircraft," said Joan Anzelmo, a spokeswoman for Grand Teton National Park.

not much to comment on here.

if you like wal-mart...you probably don't like it enough to care about the owners...unless you own stock.

if you don't like wal-mart. you might be happy, but the rest of the family is intact. so...sucks to that.

Never heard he was in the army til now but yea if I was rich I wouldn't go flying planes.

Walton was an Army veteran who served with the Green Berets as a medic during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of several members of his unit while under enemy fire, according to the company.

Not ultralights, anyway.

Interesting to know that he was in the Army. I wonder if his money will be redistrubted about his family or if he will part it out to charities/different organizations. I have several friends at Wooster, where he attended, so maybe they'll see a major donation.

Good riddance.

 You're really not that cute - no matter how much harm and death you wish on people who have done no wrong.

Care to flesh-out your claim of why the world is a better place now that this man is dead? Or are you just going for the 'shock-factor' of looking like a complete ass? ('cause to be honest, I don't think anyone is too shocked.)

Yes, the word is that he was a very giving man that contributed a lot of time and money to charity. (NOt that this would have been any less of a trajedy had he not been so giving, just thought it was worth noting)

""Because this is a homemade, non-registered, experimental aircraft, at least today they told us there was not going to be an investigation," she said. Grand Teton rangers will conduct their own probe, as is done with any major accident in the park, she said."

Sounds to me like he was pushing the envelope a little too hard.

Anything that may affect Walmart negatively is a positive for me.

Wal-Mart employs more people than any other company in the United States outside of the Federal government, yet the majority of its employees with children live below the poverty line. "Buy American" banners are prominently placed throughout its stores; however, the majority of its goods are made outside the U.S. and often in sweatshops. Critics believe that Wal-Mart opens stores to saturate the marketplace and clear out the competition, then closes the stores and leaves them sitting empty. Freedom of speech issues also come into play. Musicians are at the mercy of Wal-Mart's stringent content rules, forcing many to create "sanitized" versions of their albums specifically for the discount chain.

Taken from here.

Any business that has this much power is not good. Walmart is a virus that should be erradicated. If this jerkoff didnt have any more control over the company then i willfully retract my statement. However, if this may somehow impact walmart negatively then i say good riddance.

for his rather unfortunate demise.

Under the current tax laws, how much of his net worth will be redistributed by the government?

Im pretty sure all kits are designated experimental. Head out to a small airport on any given day and probably 10% of the aircraft are marked experimental.

homercles337,

You really buy into hate rather heavily don't you? Come back when you have something other than hate/envy to spread. Go talk to you buddy George Soros about Wal-Mart. He's a multimillion daollar stockholder. A fact he doesn't talk much about.

Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in America, and gives more to charity than any other company.

As for Wal-Mart paying too little? I'd wager three quarters of all Target and K-Mart employees are below poverty level. Most all McDonalds employees are likely below poverty level. Wal-Mart to my knowledge pays better than many, less than some. It is not in their interest to be the highest paying company in the world. That's not good for low prices to the consumer. They are cheap for a reason. Go to their headquarters and look for wealth. The buildings are nice, but nothing compared to some I have seen. Many are pre-fab steel, without even a brick veneer for attractiveness. No offices for the most part, just cubicles. They drive the market from cutting prices, it's that simple.

There are studies showing the rate of business failures in a town with a Wal-Mart is the same or less than without a Wal-Mart. It is speculated this is because more people in the area pass the stores, and the development alongside these built-up areas leads to more residents nearby. While I'm no great fan of de-centralized towns, it is Wal-Mart and the city council in question decision whether to build or not. I still wish that Wal-mart would try and centralize a city rather than de-centralize it, by building in the town center.

John Denver went in much the same way. Those ultra-ights don't always like to stay airborne.
As for his death, I was taught to never celebrate another's death, regardless of my feelings toward that person in life.
Besides, it sounds like he was an OK fellow.

Wow - you ride that high-horse like a man who's done it before.

Wal-Mart is a company. Like all businesses, it's primary motive is to increase it's stock price, enriching those who own said stock. That's it. Everything else revolves around that central goal, with only US law defining its bounds.

If they could somehow increase stock price by paying its cart-pushers $45/hr, rest assured, they would. If they could increase it by paying them $0.45/day, they would - but the law forbids it, so they don't. They law has dictated the mininum wage an employee can make, and Wal-Mart, like many businesses, has determined that paying this wage is in it's best interest. How can you fault them for that? Blame the government, if you want, not Wal-Mart.

The same thing applies to every other "argument" you make. If buying from overseas and selling locally is so bad, then why does the government allow it? If opening stores then closing them is bad, why is that not illegal? If "artists" don't want to make 'censored' music, they certainly don't have to. Wal-Mart is not holding a gun to anyone's head, as far as I know.

Wal-Mart does not exist to please you. It does not exist to help communitees, or educate the poor, or feed the homeless. It exists to make money. And if it can make money doing the above, by increasing public relations, or what have you, more power to them.

I bet you take deductions on your taxes (assume you're old enough - which may be a very big assumption.) Think of what good that money would do if you didn't take that "advantage." Are you an evil, greedy b@stard for doing something that is perfectly legal to save you money? Should people rejoice and cheer when your child dies - "Haha! Serves him right for having a father that had the nerve to claim that standard deduction!"

And I thought us conservatives were the greedy, heartless ones..

I thought this thread was about the death of John Walton, not some bullsh!t defense of WalMart or retarded economics lecture....
